@RiverValleyDSA We'd say the Russian Revolution Fund raised for the RSDLP by the Socialist Party was money well spent, and 120 years later, we remain committed to organizing for the cause of the international working class and for international socialism Join us! πΉ https://t.co/inMU9f6h6Q 4/4

Renee Good isnβt the first person killed by ICE, funded by Dems and Republicans for decades, and wonβt be the last The working class loses if we let any part of it get beaten down with bullets and border laws crafted to benefit capital A better world is possibleπΉ

The US has sponsored coups in nearly every country in South America and the Caribbean Empire doesnβt swoop in to save anyone β it intervenes to serve global capital. The people of Latin America donβt deserve bombardment, kidnappings, and regime change π§΅(2/5)

Other English language versions do exist, including an obscure one by Daniel De Leon, plus the standard English adaptation and a controversial one by Billy Bragg. One of the world's most translated songs, the Internationale still, in many languages, unites the human race. (7/8)

Socialist publisher Charles H. Kerr had prepared the first U.S. adaptation of the Internationale in the 1890s, and his version was popularized by songbooks of the Industrial Workers of the World. The work of Pottier, De Geyter, and Kerr has since entered the public domain. (6/8)

By the turn of the century, the Internationale had assumed its familiar place as the international anthem of the working class and the socialist movement. It was sung in the Russian Revolution and Spanish Civil War, in Lawrence, Massachusetts, in 1912, and in Paris in 1968. (5/8)

Set to the melody of La Marseillaise when first published in 1887, the Internationale was sung in this form at Pottier's burial later that year. Soon after, Pierre De Geyter, a member of the French Workers' Party, composed the music that is still in use today. (4/8)

Socialist Eugène Pottier first penned the Internationale after the bloody defeat of the Paris Commune. A member of the namesake First International's French section, Pottier had been elected to the Commune Council during the uprising that seized power in the city in 1871. (3/8)

Our members Ethan Carmichael and @ShaneLevett built on Charles H. Kerr's already well-known U.S. lyrics, bringing the Internationale back up to six verses while trying to remain relatively faithful, with some additions and alterations, to the original French. (2/8)
