Basketball fans who love the high school game in Wisconsin are heartbroken. Student-athletes whose dreams suddenly are cut short are beyond heartbroken. The most disappointing day in history of prep hoops in the state.
Kind of an odd fact, Marquette sophomore Markus Howard — he of the school-record 52 points Wednesday in OT win at Providence — is six months younger than Kaukauna High School senior PG whiz Jordan McCabe.
This is 2020 ... the gym where Belleville High School is practicing due to Dane County restrictions ... right out of Hoosiers. Gym is located in Monticello.
Bucks just traded Jrue Holiday. I realize what they gained in the trade, but Holiday is an absolute grinder, gamer and difference maker. Will miss him.
Former Arrowhead star Carter Gilmore (6-7) has been awarded a scholarship at the University of Wisconsin. Gilmore was a walk-on at UW this past season.
TNT announcer wrong on both accounts regarding Wesley Matthews ...
He's not from Milwaukee. He's from Madison.
And he's not a former Badger. But a former Marquette standout.
Goodness. Elementary stuff.
Confirmed: Duke recruit Jalen Johnson will suit up tonight for Nicolet during the Knights' game with Slinger. Johnson transferred from IMG Academy back to Nicolet over the holiday break.
In his final high school game, Kon Knueppel of Wisconsin Lutheran took just seven shots. And yet he dominated the game in many respects, finishing with 11 points, 11 assists, five rebounds, two steals and endless smart plays. One of the best to ever come out of the state.

Who hits two buzzer-beaters to win two different games, BOTH at the Final Four? That is just unreal. Pure and simple. Congratulations to DSHA graduate Arike Ogunbowale.
Wisconsin achieved a 14-day average decline in the percent of test results that come back positive for COVID-19 on Monday. Could this make basketball possible in the state in July? Let's hope so.
Dominican will play Sierra Canyon (California) in Springfield, Mass., in January. Sierra Canyon features Kentucky recruit Brandon Boston (6-6), 2020 star Ziaire Williams (6-8), 2023 F LeBron James Jr. (yes, LeBron's son), and 2020 G Zaire Wade (son, of Dwyane Wade).
Congratulations to former Oshkosh North Star Tyrese Haliburton in being the 12th pick in NBA draft. Always loved his potential, and look at him now. Hard work, excellent coaching and positive attitude already had carried Tyrese a long way.
Former Marquette University and Madison Memorial star Wesley Matthews recently completed his 10th NBA season. He has scored 9,899 career points, putting in very elite company for Wisconsin high school graduates and their production in the NBA. Not bad for an undrafted player.
Shaka Smart is as engaged as any coach around on the sidelines, but he never panics. His timeouts tonight were simply outstanding. Marquette beats Villanova at the Pavillion for the first time. The House of Horrors has been exorcised.
Just over a year ago ... fans flocked to UW-La Crosse to watch Jalen Suggs and Minnehaha Academy take on Johnny Davis and La Crosse Central. We need fans to return in 2021-22.
And ... call me old school ... but I would much rather have a WIAA State Tournament in an 8-4-4-4 format than the current 4-4-4-4-4. Or go to an 8-8-8 format. Five champions and the lack of large-school quarterfinals has hurt the appeal for many of the state tournament.
Prayers to Jordan Glenn and the entire Wisconsin Lutheran family. Jordan collapsed prior to start of today's game with West Allis Central. He was alert and responsive, but the game was postponed. Hoping Jordan gets a full recovery.

Some sad news out of Mineral Point. Isaac Lindsey, a 6-foot-4 senior guard headed to UNLV, played his final high school game last night. He will undergo season-ending surgery next week. Best of luck to Isaac and his family.
It's with tremendous sadness I inform the entire basketball community in Wisconsin that our good friend, "Hoops," has passed away. "Hoops" was a basketball icon in the state for decades and a close friend. He passed away last Friday. RIP, "Hoops."
2022 G Jordan Glenn (6-0) of Wisconsin Lutheran, who collapsed during a game last winter and missed the rest of the season and all summer, was recently given the clearance to begin playing again. Terrific news for Jordan and the Wisconsin Lutheran family.
Middleton graduate Storm Murphy (6-0) and Whitnall graduate Tyler Herro (6-5) playing huge roles for Wofford and Kentucky, respectively, in the NCAA Tournament game. Awesome to see both succeed on the court.
High school season for boys' basketball winding to its conclusion with games this weekend and next week followed by the tournament. Players, coaches and parents ... savor every single second. It goes by fast.
One thing I know from the bottom of my heart regarding high school sports in Wisconsin, some kids playing and others not is no good. Fall athletes missing out now have spring option. Will there be an option for winter sport athletes if their season is canceled?
West Allis Central held the ball for more than 10 minutes of the second half tonight in its 42-41 win over visiting Oak Creek. Exhibit A for why some want a shot clock.
Another big blow to high school basketball in Wisconsin -- 2019 F Jalen Johnson (6-9) of Nicolet has announced he will attend IMG Academy, a prep school in Florida, for his senior season. Best of luck to the Duke recruit at his new school.

One of the state's top high school coaches -- Scott Anderson of Stevens Point -- has decided to step down from coaching. He will be missed for his outstanding nature as a person as well as his tremendous coaching ability.
Iowa State, Nebraska, Northern Iowa and Xavier among the schools that have reached out thus far to former La Crosse Central and University of Wisconsin wing Kobe King.
It seems like the wait was longer than usual, but tomorrow another high school boys' basketball season gets underway with the start of practice sessions. Exciting time. Best of luck to all players and coaches. Enjoy the experience.
Breaking: David Joplin of Brookfield Central has asked for a release from his letter of intent to Texas. A class of 2021 forward, Joplin (6-7) had committed to Marquette coach Shaka Smart when Smart was at Texas. MU will be in mix to land Joplin now that he has opened things up.
Two years ago, Marian University finished 4-21 under coach Drake Diener. Today, they won at Concordia (WI) 77-73 to qualify for the NCAA DIII Tournament. The Sabres won 4 games to win the NACC Tourney title. Marian takes a 19-8 record into the national tourney.
Former Port Washington and University of Wisconsin standout Josh Gasser will serve as an assistant coach to Chris Siebert at Oregon High School this winter.
Marquette fans rightfully were distraught when Dawson Garcia left the program for North Carolina last summer. But the good news? Justin Lewis is better. Lewis with 33/9/6 tonight as MU sweeps Seton Hall.
Wesley Matthews is a Milwaukee Buck. Sweet. Always have enjoyed watching Wesley play, at Madison Memorial, Marquette and in the NBA. Welcome home to one of the state’s best home grown products.
It can be said there are a lot of issues in professional sports that are at odds with the average Joe. The Milwaukee Bucks are not among those issues. A great, great win for loyalty and hard work.
Jeff Boos has stepped down as the varsity boys’ basketball coach at Sun Prairie East High School. Jeff has served students, the WBCA and game exceptionally well over the years. He will be missed in the sidelines.
After 33 seasons, Jon Murphy has decided to retire as the varsity boys' basketball coach at Seymour. Murphy's teams at Seymour went 615-193, played in 12 WIAA State Tournaments, and won state titles in 1997, 2001 and 2006.

Big shout out to all the senior boys' basketball players in Wisconsin who were honored at Senior Nights across the state the past few weeks. Savor the memories as the WIAA playoffs begin next week.
Jerry Petitgoue, in his 49th season as Cuba City coach, won his 900 game at the school Saturday when Cuba City downed Fennimore in the regional-title game. Counting several years at the coach at the long-closed Gratiot High School, Petitgoue owns a 962-256 career record.
Lucky Wurtz has stepped down as the varsity boys' basketball coach at Kimberly. Lucky plans to retire as both teacher and coach following the 2020-21 school year. Job well done at Laconia, Waupun and Kimberly over the years.
Two high school players in Wisconsin now own scholarship offers from Duke -- Jalen Johnson (6-8) of Sun Prairie and Patrick Baldwin Jr. (6-8) of Sussex Hamilton. Congratulations to both players on a first for the state of Wisconsin.
Among the players on the varsity basketball roster at Whitnall High School -- Austin Herro, a 5-foot-10 freshman guard. Younger brother of former Whitnall star and current Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro.
No question which league in Wisconsin is the best -- Fox Valley Asosciation. Oshkosh North, Kaukauna, Kimberly, Oshkosh West, Appleton West all very solid.
Oshkosh, Platteville and Stevens Point all moving on to the NCAA Division III Sweet 16. Congratulations to all three teams representing Wisconsin in the playoffs.
Two final thoughts on Virginia vs Purdue — 1) Brian Anderson is beyond outstanding and 2) very happy for Brad Soderberg, Tony Bennett’s assistant and former UW coach. Brad and Tony are class acts through and through.
4 divisions of 8 teams in each division of the state tournament makes more sense than the current 4-4-4-4-4 setup for a state the size of Wisconsin. Would be nice to bring back college sectional venues as well.
Oregon, Wis., native Shaka Smart appears to be the next Marquette University men's basketball coach. Could potentially have an impact on Brookfield Central's David Joplin, who committed to Smart and Texas last fall.
Two days until the start of NCAA Division I Basketball. Just over two weeks until high school basketball practice starts. Great time of the year. Nothing beats school hoops.
What happened last night in Port Washington during the Pirates game with visiting Nicolet is beyond reprehensible. Shocking that something like this could happen in our state. So disappointing on so many different levels.
Watched hundreds and hundreds of Marquette games since I was 10 years old. Never seen anything like tonight. Incredible, improbable, impossible win at Creighton. MU's sixth straight over the Bluejays.
Nathan Slagter sprinting right off the La Crosse Centerl floor at the state tournament after hitting a game-winning shot to win a state title. Not sure it gets any better than that as a high school athlete. Enjoy your day Nathan Slagter.

Kam Cerroni, who most recently served as an assistant coach at Brookfield East, has been named the new varsity boys' basketball coach at Muskego High School.
Wisconsin showing interest in Hillsdale transfer Patrick Cartier, a 6-foot-8 forward from Brookfield East and two-time NCAA DII All-American. Cartier has two years of eligibility remaining.
The Hauser boys shining for Marquette in second half against Providence. Unflappable, skilled, smart and clutch. Sam and Joey Hauser as good as it gets.
I admit I am not fully informed on this issue, but it seems really odd Dane County Health can require schools to go virtual for grades 3-12 while more than 50,000 students move into the University of Wisconsin this week. How does that work?
Jerry Petitgoue begins his 49th year as head coach at Cuba City with a 938-256 career coaching record, which includes several years at Gratiot High School. But the last 48 years as the head coach at Cuba City ... that's incredible.
