I am glad to work at an institution where you can show up in the morning wearing a boater hat and have it considered normal. (Of course, we do take off our hats when inside.)

An intriguing debate, though I don’t really know what Pinkoski & Pecknold are saying in their responses to Fukuyama. Fukuyama is right that the concept of the West has secularist Enlightenment connotations. (Varouxakis has shown the centrality of Comte in its conceptual history.)
The older Fukuyama gets, the more Schmittian he becomes, proving that there is no liberal politics, only a Schmittian posture to defend the liberal critique of politics when the populists challenge it

I listened to the audio version of Anne Applebaum’s Autocracy, Inc. It is a troublingly ideological book, sketching a near-cosmic struggle between good and evil – “the democratic world” versus “the autocratic world.” Linkages between the two are treated as inherently corrupting.

Born in Amsterdam, I met the first religious person my age when I went to college in Utrecht. Was a big thing. Then, during my MA at the University of Chicago, most of my friends were religious (from all three monotheisms), which introduced me to a different, much larger world.
I've got survey data on the religion of 13 European countries. The most likely to be non-religious? The Netherlands. 72% are nones. Followed by Norway at 62%. The least likely to be non-religious? Eastern European countries like Croatia, Slovakia and Lithuania.

I discussed the crisis of democracy in Europe with Philip Manow hosted by @HendrKim at the @InstituteDanube in Budapest. I argued in favour of a liberalism with a soul. Thanks Eric for hosting us.

Underestimate neither the ability of the modern state to get itself into trouble (see Sweden’s overly lax, overly generous migration system up until recently), NOR its ability to integrate people and solve the mess gradually.
Swedish shootings keep plummeting and are now down almost 70% in less than four years https://t.co/zP2OBSoRvc
