10 years ago today, I boarded a plane to Barcelona with a one-way ticket, my possessions in a rucksack and less than €100 in my pocket. I was 22 years old and ready for an adventure; life wasn´t working out in the UK; I can only now put into words what I was feeling then.
All of this is to say; I´m incredibly grateful that I had the opportunities I did. My heart goes out to the young men and women of the UK who can´t do the same, mostly thanks to the votes of their parents and grandparents. You have no idea what you´ve given away.
Those two years were a fantastic blur. I had no money, no ambitions and I was having the time of my life. 10 days after I landed I met an Argentinian girl whilst handing out flyers for the Irish Bar. We celebrate our 10 year anniversary next week.
A timely reminder from
@JancisRobinson
; white wine really does look gorgeous in a decanter. Particularly when it's a golden hued, timeless classic like Viña Gravonia. Dried lemon peel, beeswax, roasted nuts, bay leaves and pressed white flowers. Lifted, evocative, delicious.
None of this would have been possible without freedom of movement. I probably earnt €10k after tax in that first year in the city; a long way short of the minimum to qualify for a work permit now. Without financially comfortable parents or a well paid job lined up; no dice.
Champagne good enough to end a Twitter hiatus. A wine of two, delicious halves; robust yet fresh, savoury yet delicately honeyed. Autumnal red fruits, ginger, honey, smoke and a touch of fresh mushroom. Deep, layered and effortlessly persistent. The hype is entirely deserved.
Barcelona has been incredibly good to me. I discovered wine here. I made nearly all my best friends here. My son was born here, and we´ve invested all our savings into a house; the millenial dream, without parental support. My life, as I know it, was built here.
After 11.5 years in the hospitality industry (the same group of restaurants) my beautiful wife handed in her notice today. Big changes ahead and hopefully, that will mean more quality time with great bottles together. Celebrating in the way we know best.
Vamos!
My first night drinking in central Barcelona for a long, long time. Gorgeous night. Coincidentally, the first real hangover I've had for months. No regrets, though ask me again at around 3pm.
The best Spanish wine I've had for some time. So bright, so vivid, so deliciously savoury. Wild, dark fruits, black pepper, fresh bloody meat, black tea and thyme. An explosion of flavour in a lightweight (12.5%) package - long and incredibly satisfying. Worth the premium.
As much as I understand the importance of wine-making, I can´t shake the feeling that all the truly profound wines I´ve ever tasted were made by people who saw themselves primarily as farmers.
Within a week I had my NIE (tax) number and I was working mornings in a hostel in exchange for accomodation, evenings in an Irish Bar for €6 an hour, and teaching Catalan school-children how to play rugby for a little extra cash a few weeks later. I was having a blast.
A new vintage of an old favourite. Bursting with fresh red fruit; Pink Lady apples, strawberries and pomegranate, with a hint of sappy herbs in the background. Juicy, weighty and fresh, yet the salty, persistent acidity is really what I love about this. Absolutely delicious.
2024 begins! Gently aromatic with endearing, savoury elements; fresh orchard fruits, pressed white flowers, oyster shells, iodine and almond paste. Absolute magic on the palate; fluid, broad, waxy and deliciously saline at once - overlapping and folding together. Just beautiful.
No matter what I tried I never felt truly at home. The military, higher education, security work, hospitality, manual labour, none if it really fit... I needed to get out and see what life was like elsewhere. I made the decision with a weeks notice. The ticket was €35.
Easily the most delicious wine from our Christmas. Lifted and complex but so, so fresh; all cherry, blackberries, rolling tobacco, undergrowth, dill, graphite and delicate floral touches. The oak has folded in beautifully over the years. A wine that will probably live forever.
Hey

. You´re a successful, profitable business. You shouldn´t be sending emails to your followers asking for them to work for free.
You´re asking for proof-reading and helping to design your posters, which you then sell. Pay people for their time and expertise.
My Dad asked me to buy him 6 bottles of Spanish red wine for under €50, from across the country and in a variety of styles.
Retail prices, no discounts: €49.90 for these 6.
Vamos!
Excited to announce my new project: Rack and Return! We're a new Wine School in Barcelona offering WSET Courses and Classes! Course dates already up for September and October, and some words on the personal decision behind it:
I rarely drink Bordeaux at home, but I always have time for Belair-Marquis d'Aligre. Old-school, soulful stuff. Blackberries and dried, dark cherries, tobacco, cedar, mushrooms and wet earth. A walk through a forest after a thunderstorm. Structured, fresh and in a good spot now.
Everything in life is better with a glass of Chablis. Subtly aromatic; layers of waxy orchard fruits, lemon curd, chamomile and sea-spray. Comes to life on the palate with such presence, animated by persistent, saline acidity. Another lesson in producer > appellation. Delicious!
People who say that all hangovers are the same have clearly never overdone it with Chartreuse. Either that or I've died and this is actually hell. Impossible to know at this point.
I give up. I don't care how hot it is - I need a glass of something delicious. This is perfect; as though someone crossed an aromatic, rosé base wine with a savoury, driven Blanc de Blanc. Red berries, hazelnuts, chalk and wild flowers. Mouth-watering persistence. Bravo, Bereche!
I am delighted to day that my first, full report is now out! 1046 wines tasted, 600 full tasting notes included, insight, observations and opinions, all on the world of Catalan wine.
So, I´ve just completed a full month of 0 alcohol consumption for the first time since I started working with wine.
In truth, I don´t really feel any different, though it´s comforting to know that it was relatively easy to do.
I do believe it´s time for a cold beer.
A belated 35th birthday present to myself. There is no greater producer of Syrah in the world.
It feels like there's a decade of age difference between the wines. The lifted, open, meatiness of the 2006 vs the driven, dense dark fruit and pepper of the 2010. Just stunning.
As I come towards the end of a weeks abstinence from alcohol I am once again reminded of the same conclusion I come to whenever I take these short breaks: life is so, so much more rewarding, interesting and complete with wine.
A truly joyful bottle of wine. Intensely aromatic and surprisingly floral; all crushed rose petals, bright red berries, sappy herbs and a touch of warm earth. Still punchy and mouth-watering at 5 years old, with a touch of gentle tannin gently tugging on the finish. Gorgeous.
One of the most singular wines in the country. Smoky, flinty and citric on the nose, with a hint of salted almonds and white fruits. So tense on the palate; deliciously saline and just a little wild with it. Coche-Dury meets the Jura. Absolutely delicious and deserves the hype!
A friend just stopped by to send up a bottle via the elevator, whilst we had a conversation from 3 floors away.
Heineken don't do Guardian Angels, but if they did...
If there's a better producer of Syrah on our mad little world, then I haven't found them yet. Bright and expressive, the blue and black fruits giving way to smoked meat, fresh thyme and a burst of violets. Effortlessly elegant and silky despite its punchy youth. Timeless.
Once this is over, I´m going on one of my favourite journeys.
Take the slow, 6am train from Barcelona to Priorat, watching the sun rise over the Mediterranean before we turn inland to the mountains.
No visits, just walk into the hills and sit there with a good book, all day.
Is anyone else looking at their favourite wines and thinking about drinking them sooner rather than later? If I get taken out of this world by the whims of a potato-headed lunatic with nuclear weapons, I´d like to start that journey with a happy heart and a purple smile.
I met her 7 days after I moved to Barcelona, on Las Ramblas of all places, whilst handing out flyers.
11 years later and here we are. La vida esta bien.
Well. This is just delicious.
Effusively aromatic with savoury hints of rye whisky to balance the sheer weight of tropical fruit, marmalade and floral characters. Weighty and bold, with a notably snappy tension between the mouth-watering acidity and natural sweetness. Gorgeous!
A Christmas wine delivery. I know people don't like stating favourites in the world of wine, but Envinate are my favourite Spanish producer by some way. They make affordable magic wherever they go - brilliant wines.
Topically; an undisputed bench-mark that anyone can buy. A gorgeous mixture of bright, red fruits and the evocative aromas of slow woodland decay; undergrowth, dried violets and petrichor. Refreshing, vibrant and layered with soft tannin. I can't imagine anyone not liking this!
It's Friday night. Sushi is en route. This waxy, herbal beauty is just getting into its stride; all gently bruised orchard fruits, lemon-curd, thyme and dried grass. A wine that subtly builds on the palate with each sip, right into the long, savoury finish.
Bliss.
Well, this is stunning. Beaten copper in the glass and practically winking at the sunshine, with notes of sweet clementines, raspberries, white peach, rose petals, brioche and a touch of flint underpinning it all. Delicate and graceful yet effortlessly long; really quite special.
A birthday bottle. Outrageously young at 11 years old but just starting to reveal itself. Ripe blackcurrant, blueberries and hints of baked plums, cedar, smoke and dried mint. Incredibly fine tannins and a luscious, creamy texture. Long, luxurious and begging another 5-10 years!
Potentially *the* standard-bearer for Ribeira Sacra; evocative, delicious and under €20 despite demand. Bright cherry and raspberry fruit mingles with black pepper, undergrowth, wild-flowers and touches of incense. So lifted and floral yet so thrillingly wild. Smitten.
I have no idea how anyone ages wine like this. I can't keep my hands off them.
A journey through the aromatic spectrum; lime zest, flint, jasmine, passion-fruit and quince. Soft tension; a restrained honeyed character with just a hint of the bottled lightning of cooler vintages.
Gorgeous wine for a lazy Sunday. Wild strawberries, garden herbs, dandelions and just a touch of warm earth; deliciously wild and inviting. Supple tannins with a clay-like texture and a savoury, fruit-inflected finish that never seems to end. Superb stuff and still so young!
Wooohoo! This is what St. Joseph is meant to be about. Gorgeous dark berries, just starting to dry, snus tobacco, black pepper, black olives and rosemary. Super fine tannins and fresh acidity lift the savoury profile, with just a hint of fruit sweetness on the long, long finish.
Today marks 8 years since I stepped aboard that one-way flight to a city I'd never been to before, and it remains the single best decision I've ever made. Met the love of my life, made amazing friends, discovered wine and made this incredible city my home. Here's to the next 8!
Last photo of the Basque Country, I promise. I just have to keep pinching myself, considering its almost November and this is what the sea looks like by 10am.
A classic showing the heat of the vintage with it's ripe, effusive aromatics; green pineapple, ripe apricots, mandarin orange, jasmine and even a touch of honey. Despite this, the acidity is lovely; persistent, creamy and lasting into the delicately bitter finish. A lovely wine!
I'll never get tired of drinking Beaujolais. Ripe and larger in scale than many vintages, but still so gorgeously pure fruited. Strawberries, damsons, fresh earth and just a hint of white pepper. Chalky tannins with a persistent grip and so juicy, without any warmth. Just lovely!
A bit special. Dried dark cherries and plums, wet earth, tobacco and undergrowth on the nose; a little wild and so deliciously savoury. Layers and layers of flavour, blended seamlessly with ultra-fine tannin, with a graphite-tinged finish. Complex, perfectly balanced, complete.
Spain in lock-down and with an absolute crisis looming as we discover the true extent of the damage caused by our delay. Nurseries and schools closed, no gym, 0 income for the foreseeable future and no announced government support.
Now is not the time to be sober. Salud!
Comfortably the best American Pinot Noir I've ever tried, despite it's youth. Ripe and deep, but with restraint; there's nothing jammy or confected here. Ripe cherries, undergrowth, rose petals and light toast. So very silky, so fine. The real deal and with plenty to unfold still
Absolutely delighted. Thank you so much to
@WSETuk
and
@WinesofGermany
for the award and the wonderful experience of studying the WSET Diploma, learning a huge amount and making lots of new friends. Nights like tonight are to be treasured. Vamos!
It's Friday night, it peaked at 23C today and very good pizza is currently en route - it's a night for an old favourite. Packed with gorgeous red fruits, just hinting at the first tinges of savoury, early-maturity. Sappy, herbal and so deliciously weighty. A star amongst rosé.
Well, as I currently don't know how I'm going to pay my mortgage, it's fair to say that it'll be another year without applying for the MW. Time to tweak the study plan again.
I re-read these 2 books every single year. Seems like a good time to kick off with the basics again!
One of the best decisions I ever made in wine was to spread my purchases across as many producers as I could.
It's been 6 years since I first picked up a wine book, and I've yet to buy a case of anything. Max orders are for 3 bottles, more commonly 1-2
I highly recommend it!
Do people who've arbitrarily decided that they don't like natural wine just avoid Beaujolais altogether? Hard to think of another region where the top talent are pulling in such a singular direction. A high-toned, floral and powerful Cuvee des Fous from the brilliant Lapalu.
It's hard to imagine a more satisfying bottle of Albariño. Lemon zest, cedar, dried wildflowers and sea-spray on the nose; deliciously untamed and intoxicating on the nose alone. Electric and so pure-fruited, yet so wild. Real terroir meets an experienced, subtle hand. Superb!
Everything in life is better with Chablis. Lemon zest, ripe pears, honeysuckle, wet rocks and the most delicate touches of cedar and mint. Wonderful tension on the palate; so tense and steely, yet with noticeable weight and texture. This has a long, delicious journey ahead of it.
Gamay so good that I'm now spending October's wine budget on Thillardon, P Cotton and Chamonard.
Delicate, bright and zippy. A remarkable spread of flavour, narrowed to a single, mouth-watering point. Wild flowers, raspberries, petrichor and undergrowth over granite. Gorgeous.
Another superb 2016 from Roagna. So delicate; packed with red berry fruits, floral perfume and hints of fresh, wild herbs. Bright and driven on the palate, with masses of powdery tannin and just a hint of tar underneath the prettiness of the wine. A gorgeous Barbaresco.
Happy Friday! A Riojan classic entering it's prime; ripe and dried black cherries, plum, sage, star anis, cedar and incense. Silky soft. It's incredible how much fresh fruit this has at 19 years of age; a juicy core surrounded by a kaleidoscope of savoury complexity. Delicious!
Best wine of the year so far; crystalline purity and absolutely humming with energy. Lime zest, red currants, nougat, honey and touches of ginger on the nose. Substantial and vinous yet electric on the palate, narrowing to a clean, chalky finish. I'm completely smitten.
Absolutely gorgeous, high altitude Garnacha. Bright, earthy strawberries, rose petals, violets, garrigue and white pepper. So floral, so delicate and yet so full of flavour. Powdery tannins settle on the palate, whilst the flavours wash over and into a lengthy finish. Delicious!
Day 9 in quarantine. At 8pm every evening the city stops to applaud the front line workers, whether they be in a hospital, a super market or some other essential job that puts them at risk. Vamos!
The effortless elegance of Jamet will forever have my heart in the N. Rhone, but I can't imagine a producer capturing the ruggedness of Mauve quite so completely as Pierre Gonon. The silken texture of Les Olivier's, and the restrained power the St. Joseph rouge. Gorgeous wines.
A master-class in balance and probably the best of the 2018 Albariños I've tried. Salted lemons (put down the tequila), white peach, honeysuckle and sweet Tarragon; classically Albariño. Beautifully ripe, salty and fresh with deceptive depth. 2019 will be truly gorgeous.
Txakoli on another level. Ripe, scented yellow fruits; golden apples, plums and quince overlapping with subtle, sweet spices and a touch of bitter orange. Bright and lively on the palate, with flavours slowly narrowing to an intense, focused burst of citrus on the finish. Lovely!
@madisommelier
Pesto is one of those things I'm convinced it's better to buy. The last time I made it, the cost of the fresh basil was considerably more than just buying a premade jar of it.
My debut piece for
@timatkin
, looking at the recent furore over the supposed lack of engagement from younger wine drinkers. There´s a very good reason for it, and spoiler; it has nothing to do with alternative packaging.
WSET Level 2 in wines is a hell of a course, but spare a thought for the teachers. By 8am on a Sunday morning my teeth were already a red ruin after proof-tasting 17 red wines and 7 whites! Big day of around-the-world tasting ahead.
Well, this is gorgeous. A medley of cherry fruit at various stages of ripeness and dessication, overlaid with aromas of petrichor, dried mint, orange peel and rose petals. Classically structured; firm, grainy tannins and effortless freshness. Excellent Barbaresco in all but name.
If you ever want proof of the "magnum effect" with sparkling wines, just try it with middle-of-the-road NV Champagnes (sorry, Philipponnat!). It's an entirely different wine, and undeniably better. More focused, brighter, fresher, more balanced. The best bottle of this I've had.
Powerful...Dolcetto? This is always a structured wine but I've never seen it at such scale. Ripe, plummy fruit, licorice, dark chocolate and iron-tinged, red clay. Surprisingly fresh, chalky and with such depth; a wine to close your eyes and sink into. Don't open for a few years!
Restoration of the Soul. The nose is a direct portal to the Mosel; lemon sherbert, lime zest, powdered rocks, wild flowers and the odd-but-happy coupling of honey and kerosene. Electric. The subtle touch of RS is nothing more than a necessary speed-bump. My kind of Riesling.
The most Instagrammed bottle in existence? Immediately attractive and bright; an enthusiastic bundle of ripe cherry, raspberry, crushed violets, wet stones and fresh sage. Firm and punchy in youth, with the persistent acidity winning at the close of the 12th round. Huge potential
Happy Wednesday! A beautifully defined wine just hitting it's stride; fresh green pears, lemon zest, sea-spray, rock salt and delicate hints of jasmine. Perfectly balanced and subtly persistent; a wine that has no need to raise its voice in order to be heard. My kind of Chablis!
Another fantastic 2016 Godello from Mr. Palacios. Dense yet so fresh, packed with layers of lemon pie, peach, melon, toast, vanilla and macadamia nuts. Weighty yet never heavy, thanks to the persistent, creamy acidity. Not unlike very good, Grand Cru Chablis! €32 for a magnum
Unbelievably lucky to have such beautiful scenery on my doorstep. Known as the "Labrynth of Horta" due to the central maze and a truly gorgeous way to spend a Sunday morning with my family.
I got married yesterday, to a beautiful, intelligent, kind woman I met 7 days after landing in Barcelona, over 7 1/2 years ago. I couldn't ask for a better partner in crime for this adventure we call life. I'm a lucky, happy man!
As we slowly descend towards Autumn, I find myself already thinking about firm, savoury Nebbiolo, lifted old Rioja, broad, Loire Chenin and every kind of Pinot Noir known to man. Rejoice, for drinking season is almost here!
