Two other big things: 1) successive governments talking down anything that’s not plug and play vocational (bizarre as languages are so useful but they are a casualty of this) and 2) huge resurgence of Little Englander mentality over the last two decades.
On @BBCr4today this morning at 7.50 talking about why fewer students are taking up modern foreign languages - especially at A Level? My answers poverty (much more take up in affluent areas), lack of opportunity & therefore aspiration, plus relative scarcity of language teachers.

People need to be talking more about the soft crisis in A&H/SS peer review which is a direct result of increased workload. Academic service as prestige or moral obligation isn’t cutting it any more.
