4. Can't get Knee Shield in -> Butterfly hook If there's no space for your Knee Shield, use your inside leg to chop their leg and feed your outside foot into a butterfly hook. Loading them up, get your second hook in and now you're into the Butterfly Guard system.

3. Underhook isn't available -> Knee Shield Get your shin across their body. DO NOT push them away, but rather you want to chest escape. Now you have space to get your arm frames in front of you while trying to recover your guard.

2. John Wayne fails -> Underhook This one is pretty popular. If feel like you couldn't trap the arm, get the underhook. Underhook allows you to start attacking as you move your body down into other sweeps or getting to the back.

1. John Wayne Sweep The first thing you do in bottom Half Guard is to prevent the cross face. Bridge into them to bump them off. This gives you a little bit of space to hip escape. They'll try to continue to drive into you. Use this motion to pinch their leg and trap their arm
