An absolute privilege to be on the call for this historic moment tonight. Shoutout to
@DannyMacTV
who deserved the moment and would have done a marvelous job with it.
Pete Alonso is the fastest in MLB history to 70 career homers. It took him 220 games, 11 games sooner than it took Aaron Judge, who previously held that record.
Gut-wrenching to have to break this news on the air tonight. RIP Tom Seaver. Condolences to his family, friends and every single Mets fan that has ever existed that loved him so dearly. Forever The Franchise.
Justin Verlander is 12th all time with 3,198 strikeouts. Max Scherzer is 13th with 3,193. That will be a grueling battle to watch in Queens next summer.
100 win teams tend not to face much pressure in season. They take care of their business day to day and move on. That changes in the playoffs as does the stiffness of the competition. Some thrive, some don’t. It’s not the format or layoff changing things. It’s the pressure.
Why are we so obsessed with who’s not still playing in the MLB
#Postseason
when there’s such an obvious reason that teams like the Philadelphia Phillies are still playing?
Does
@jaysonst
have a point?
You know what this incredible Dodgers-Padres heavyweight title fight needs right now? Automatic runner at second. It's only the worst rule in sports. No big deal.
Historic day for the Mets, a game changer for a franchise that should be one of the most elite in sports. Max Scherzer dramatically upgrades who they are on the field and in the clubhouse. This team is trying to win a World Series, doing what it takes, and it’s great to see.
Hard to believe a team had a 10.5 game division lead, ended up getting to 100 wins and still didn't hang on to the division. That's an unfathomable run by the Braves to take the East.
A beautiful summer Saturday night. A sellout. Another come-from-behind win. A 15-1 run. These are special days for the New York
#Mets
. Soak it all in, everyone. This is awesome.
Two big wins for the Mets today. Lots of cheers at the ballpark for that.
But the loudest Citi Field got tonight was for the Howie chant.
@HowieRose
deserves it all and then some. Can't wait to sit next to him again and watch him do what he does better than anyone else.
Mets starters have a 2.26 ERA. The team played some excellent defense today. They're off to a 7-4 start, and they haven't even started to click offensively yet. Could be a real dangerous ballclub this year.
Brandon Nimmo getting called out because the impact of his dive into second base knocked him off the base for 1/100th of a second while the tag was on him after a hustle double is everything that's wrong with replay review in MLB. That was a joke.
When MLB expands to 32 teams, it should forget the AL and NL.
Embrace a dramatic geographic realignment.
Here's one way
@JimBowdenGM
thinks it could look ⤵️
Jacob deGrom has been the best pitcher in Major League Baseball this year. If he keeps it up, I hope Cy Young voters are sophisticated enough to vote for a guy who may not even have 10 wins.
Jacob deGrom just set an expansion era record by working his 11th straight perfect 1st inning.
Then, he became the first pitcher in history to get routinely frisked by the umpires, who were loudly booed.
#Mets
are a 1/2 game behind Arizona and San Francisco, 1 game behind Milwaukee and 3 in back of the Phillies and Nationals. Suddenly, having to climb so many others doesn’t seem so daunting, and the team is officially back in New York. Hope you come out to Citi Field this week.
Quite a day in
#Mets
history. 10 years ago today, the Mets drafted Matt Harvey 7th overall while the Blue Jays selected Noah Syndergaard 38th overall. Several rounds later, the Mets drafted another pitcher, Jacob deGrom.
This is how good teams become great teams. That was some performance with 2 outs in the 9th inning. A win that will be remembered for a long time if this turns into a memorable year.
I hope Cy Young voters take into account that pitchers are basically only facing their divisions this year. The Central has 5 of the 6 lowest scoring offenses in the NL this year. That should matter in this type of season.
The major league leader in home runs just threw his first career complete game on the mound with a 1-hitter of the Tigers. Shohei Ohtani never ceases to dazzle.
This was an absolutely great day for the Mets. Overcame 2 pitchers making their MLB debuts that were out there for 7 innings, came back 3 times, grinded to the finish line, beat the Phillies, 10-9, gained a game in the standings. An enormous win all things considered.
One of the main points of the MLB All-Star Game is the civic pride you get from watching your team’s best players in their own uniforms competing with and against all the other teams’ best players. That’s taken away with these uniforms. They can’t do this again.
Make sure Luis Rojas gets some credit right there. He took his catcher out for Jeff McNeil, and McNeil comes through with a huge hit. That's high-level managing and execution.
Throwing a one-hitter and hitting 2 home runs in a major league doubleheader. There is no comparison in the history of sports. We are lucky to walk the earth with Shohei.
Carlos Beltran checks a few boxes right out of the gate.
Can he handle New York? ✅
Will clubhouse respect him? ✅
Does he have extreme understanding of the game? ✅
Can he activate himself and get a big hit off the bench? ✅
Thank you to the
@Mets
for this last night. It was really cool and very special. Will always have a lot of love for the organization and the people there.
It’s a huge day in Mets history, and importantly, it’s done with plenty of time to make an impact on the 2021 season. It’ll be an eventful winter in Queens.
This is all just to get a glimpse of Shohei Ohtani. He’s a rock star, an icon and the most marketable player in Major League Baseball by a mile. There is nothing like it in this sport.
Shohei Ohtani allowed 1 run in 6.1 innings tonight with 10 strikeouts. He's hit 2 home runs. He leads the majors in 10-strikeout games since the start of last year and leads the majors in home runs this year. Magical doesn't even begin to describe it.
If I may peel the curtain back just a bit. As I'm watching the final play unfold, I hear this pounding in the booth. I look down, and it's Howie stomping his feet as he's calling this. Incredible.
A tough way to end it. Still a complete honor to sit in the
@MetsBooth
and call these games this season with
@HowieRose
. We wish we could have had a few more this year. It's a disappointing close to an otherwise memorable year.
Getting swept by the Braves could have hurt the
#Mets
a lot worse, but the Cubs also got swept by Washington while the Phillies lost 2 of 3 to Miami. Milwaukee lost today too so the wild card standings are mostly unchanged. Big time series starts in Queens on Tuesday.
It was a privilege to watch Jacob deGrom pitch as often as we have in a Mets uniform. One of the best of all-time when he was healthy. He got what he wanted with Texas, and I’m certain the Mets will find the right fit to replace him.
Well there's that resiliency from the 1st-place Mets. Have to think Luis Rojas had exactly this in mind when he got ejected the way he did in the 1st inning. That's an old-school tactic that seemed to pay off today. Big comeback win for this team.
I’m very grateful to the
@Mets
and
@wcbs880
for the opportunity to sit next to Howie Rose, one of my favorite people/broadcasters on the planet, this season. Can’t wait to get started. And welcome back to the
@MetsBooth
, Eddie C!
91 wins for the Mets now this season, most they've had in a year since 2006. This has been a special season for this franchise with some serious business still to come.
Do some of you think that Conforto should have talked the umpire out of making the wrong call? I'm not sure how the Mets could have acted differently here.
Always bittersweet at the end. Thank you to the Angels fans for being so welcoming this year. Had an incredible time with my broadcast partners on
@BallySportWest
and
@AppleTV
. I’m so fortunate to have a role in the best sport in the world, and I’m already counting down to 2024.
