My latest for @InGoalMedia takes a very close look at Ken Dryden’s giant goalies/bigger nets essay in @TheAtlantic. Both in its details and its overall aim, Dryden misses the mark.

An underrated goaltender throughout most of his career. A rock-solid 1B, a goalie short king (sub 6’), and as consistent as they come. You might not have known it at the time, but you were lucky if he played for your team.

This April, I watched a 12yo goalie in tryouts who was large for her age and moved very well. A lock to make the team I thought. Until shots started coming. I’ve never seen a goalie move so well so unable to stop pucks. Hardly stopped a thing. Baffling.

Athletically, kids are wildly different from each other in even more ways than I’d believed before. I’m watching a 9yo soccer practice, and this one kid can dribble, pass, and kick well enough, but cannot get the ball. Misses every pass, can’t intercept one, or strip an attacker.

Are goalies weird? That’s been established. What I’m discovering is that they are all weird in different ways, many of which are incompatible or mutually exclusive. There seems to be no common core, save being notably different from other kinds of players.

First time at a kid’s goalie camp, and I feel like an anthropologist. General hockey camp kids tend to travel in a large pack or two based on age, with a hierarchy privileging loud irreverence and height. Here, the largest group I’ve seen is 5 kids, and they change constantly 🤔.

Nothing delights me more than telling Zs and Alphas where their slang comes from. The fact that rizz comes from charisma didn’t really phase anyone, but ppl have been brought to tears learning that “bet” derives from “you betcha!”.

An unfortunate consequence of pickleball taking over tennis courts: . I’m here waiting for a spot to open up, and all three courts are being used for pickleball. Nobody is getting winded. It’s gonna be hours.

People don’t seriously debate who deserves the title of Canada’s greatest athlete. It’s this guy. Everybody else is competing for silver.
