It's been an eventful couple of months! We had a baby, and I got tenure and a few awards; Best Early Career Teacher in Purdue Engineering, ACS PMSE Early Investigator, Journal of Membrane Science's Early Career Editorial Board, and the Showalter Foundation Early Career Grant!

I was honored to receive the Faculty Excellence Award for Early Career Teaching, which Purdue Engineering gives to one untenured prof. each year, along with a $4k prize! They even played a nice video from my students and colleagues at the awards ceremony!

Our paper in @DesalinationJ explores how membrane properties, burst pressure, & system optimization impact efficiency & water cost in integrated #Forward_Osmosis & osmotically assisted #Reverse_Osmosis systems.

Last fall, the US #DOE wrote an article about the 1st place winners for #outreach at the #Marine_Energy and Hydropower Collegiate Competitions, the former being our Purdue team with K-12 water wheel competitions, education kits, and more!

We developed a liquid-like polymer lubricant layer on a #bioinspired bumpy surface, fabricated with SLM 3D printing. Droplets grow faster at bump apexes and shed rapidly via ultralow #CAH (<3°), greatly enhancing #Atmospheric #Water #Harvesting!

We had a productive 2024 for papers: 19 journal papers, 5 peer-reviewed conference papers, and I was last/corresponding author for 21 of these, a new record for the group!

We published a pair of modeling papers on electrocatalytic self-pumping membranes. Flow in such pores is heavily influenced by pore radius and pH, and less so by porosity, pore length, tortuosity, and pore defects.

Our team’s #SWRO study in @Joule_CP shows that using the most #efficient #tech (Batch #reverse_osmosis, better #pumps, spacers, #membranes, etc) can reduce total #energy by 57%, eliminating 82% of the excess energy above the #thermodynamic minimum.

We've had a fortunate October for fundraising, receiving grants we led from the #DOE and #ONR, Purdue CHPB, and two company projects. Most of those who contributed to these celebrated with a cookie cake.

We demonstrated an “Electroless” #membrane #coating process that uses #catalysis of silver ions (rather than electrodeposition) to coat Copper #nanoparticles. The antimicrobial coatings were exceptionally uniform and robust on electrospun PAN membranes.

Six of my lab's PhD students earned Fellowships/Scholarships that start this semester!

Three of our summer undergrad students won awards from the SURF program; Lily Avery Waterman and Kazim Jafri won "best first time researcher" awards, and .Joyce Hu won an "honorable mention" for best poster.

I'm proud to have 3 lab members starting tenure-track faculty jobs this coming academic year! Saba Shahvari will be starting at @RoseHulman, Jinwoo Oh will be at Chungnam National University, and Andrew Fix will be at @UTAustin, which are all highly ranked programs by @usnews

I forgot to post this at the time, but a couple weeks ago we brought a solid contingent of grad students from the lab to enjoy @AWWA's ACE conference in #Anaheim (and #Disneyland!).

We developed a performance framework for #photocatalytic #oxidation air treatment in #HVAC systems to remove #bioaerosols. We found that #parallel_plate geometries outperform #honeycombs, and that improper geometries limit most commercial systems
