In 1937 MCW faculty member Dr Edgar End pioneered the use of pressurized helium-oxygen for deep diving. Alongside Milwaukee deep-sea diver Max Nohl (pictured), they went on to develop underwater diving apparatuses for the U.S. Navy. #ArtofScience #ProjectWonder @WIMaritime

Like their 7 other relatives in the pike genus Esox, the northern pike (named for its resemblance to a "pike" - a long spear) has a distinctive duckbill-shaped snout, long torpedo-shaped body, and large mouth with lots of sharp chompers #25DaysofFishmas

As the only freshwater eel in North America, American eel doesn’t look like many other #GreatLakes fish. It has a snake-like body + very tiny scales/mucus covering that makes it as “slippery as an eel” - lampreys are similarly shaped but don’t have jaws (eels do) #25DaysofFishmas

The silver carp is one of 3 carp species in the genus Hypophthalmichthys, which, besides being a mouthful, is Greek meaning “fish with eyes below” referring to their low-set eyes - they can grow to be over 3 ft (1 m) long and weigh 100 lbs (50 kg) #25DaysofFishmas

Whatever you call today’s featured fish - laker, namaycush, mackinaw, siscowet, togue, chinamekos - just don’t call them late for dinner! Like a 🌟 atop the #Fishmas tree, the lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) was historically top of the #GreatLakes food web #25DaysofFishmas

Recently, @WisHistory maritime archaeologists Caitlin Zant & Tamara Thomsen spent time with Santa & Mrs. Claus on fish tug delivering Christmas trees to @WIMaritime, in true Great Lakes maritime fashion! Every year, @WIMaritime hosts “Christmas Tree Ship Day." #WisconsinHistory

Don’t go chasing waterfalls: Longnose dace’s species name “cataractae” means “of the cataract” (cataract being another word for large waterfall) because this species was first described from a specimen collected from Niagara Falls #25DaysofFishmas

The golden redhorse is one of ~20 species in the group Moxostoma (the redhorse suckers) - “Moxostoma” comes from Greek "myxo" = “to suckle” + "stoma" = “mouth” so three guesses as to how this fish eats #25DaysofFishmas

Yellow perch is part of the Percidae family: their scientific name “Perca” is Greek meaning “perch” while “flavescens” is Latin for "becoming gold" or "yellow colored" - we scientists are a *very* creative bunch #25DaysofFishmas

The starhead topminnow is part of a fun family - the Fundulidae family! Many of its 40-some members are known as killifishes + live in a wide variety of habitats (fresh, salty, everything in between), but the starhead topminnow is just found in freshwater #25DaysofFishmas
