Sierra Leone began a two-week WHO-supported workshop on 4 August 2025, focused on DNA sequencing and bioinformatics. The training, running through 15 August, aims to build sustainable national capacity in genomic surveillance, with a strong focus on mentorship and leadership.

Sierra Leone receives 50,000 new mpox vaccine doses, supported by @WHO, @AfricaCDC, @gavi, @UNICEFSL & partners. This fourth batch of vaccines arrive at a time the government, WHO and partners are deploying teams to all districts to bring the outbreak to an end. #vaccineswork

WHO & Institute Pasteur Dakar team met with the district lab team to explore solutions for timely and safe sample transportation. They also visited the treatment & isolation unit at Makeni Regional Hospital to assess ongoing case management efforts.

Active case search and contact line listing continue across districts and chiefdoms in response to the #mpox outbreak. Today, WHO Incident Manager Dr. Margaret Lamunu is on the ground, actively participating in field efforts.

Intensified mpox sensitization is ongoing nationwide. In Bandajuma, WHO teams joined national & district responders to engage shops, markets, pharmacies, & homes—including the pharmacy owner who identified the first case. Community awareness is key to early detection and response

WHO supervisor teams are on the ground! Working alongside national and district teams, they’ve joined door-to-door Mpox sensitization activities across communities, including homes with confirmed cases. These efforts aim to stop the spread through education and early action.

@slnpha ED Prof Foday Sahr praised this joint effort: “With good leadership, everything is possible. The vehicles provided last year through WHO helped respond to five emergencies; Within 48 hours, teams were on the ground responding.”.

This donation, part of the @Pandemic_Fund Agreement, will enhance district-level emergency preparedness, disease surveillance and support the country's response to Mpox and other outbreaks.

Today at Youyi Building, WHO handed over eight vehicles to @mohs_sl, presented by Country Rep. Dr George Ameh to Minister of Health @DembyAustin.

In Port Loko, WHO supervisors engaged with the district case management team to assess current capacity, identify gaps, and review the case management center supporting efforts to strengthen the mpox response.
