I think it's funny how my two favourite shooter games, Halo and Metal Arms: Glitch in the System, both started development as RTS games but later pivoted to single-character level driven focus, and the RTS elements from earlier development got slotted as past events/tech.

On a footnote, take note of how Bungie's use of hexagons is broken up by other visual noise (dirt, scratches, colour variation). This is why 343/HS' use of hexagons fails. They only present them in a linear fashion across a uniform space.

2/2 Voronoi was the way to go for Covenant detailing in Halo 1-3. There was strong use of triangular structuring of forerunner paneling in h1&2, and Bungie introduced hexagonal shapes but not directly "here is just a hexagon" in Halo 3.

1/2 Me when I'm in a "making things up that sound logical" challenge and my opponent is a Halo fan who doesn't know anything about 3D rendering. Detail maps have been a thing in Halo since CE. It is an artistic choice, not a technology limitation.
@MetaDemonReal From Halo 3 onwards, they used hexagons, since the 360 had more power than the original Xbox, and they added more detail to the hexagons from then on, as it is a perfect geometric shape for structures or coating patterns such as armor, ships, or other structures.
