So PLEASE. Do NOT think that you are paying your favourite artists when you listen to them on spotify, or youtube or whatever. Just make the effort and send them a few bucks through their website, buying physical albums, merchandising... ⤵️

So what's the lesson ? I don't rely on music for income, but those kind of things is definitely why I lost the will to try harder. I'm "no one" in the field, but those who really put the work and still "believe" must struggle even more than I imagined.⤵️

Here is the culprit : Something happened in april 2020 in Algeria. More than 200,000 streams earned me.... 3 cents. This is the value of music for social media platforms, and I'm pissed.⤵️

Going through detailed report, we can see "something" happened in 2020. Big streams pikes all come from "Instagram/Facebook".⤵️

We can (should?) argue that being paid ~$0.50 for 100 streams is definitely questionable. It's like listening to an artist for a full day, and tossing him/her a quarter. And I'm not even thinking about bands who would need to split said quarter. Anyway let's dig deeper⤵️

The "Under the Storm" single went through the roof ! And yet it had just earned me about the same as the other ones...⤵️

This is my current total balance. It's about 5 years worth of online presence. I don't promote a lot, it's not a big deal. Most of my songs are around 100-200 streams. But digging a little deeper out of curiosity, something stands out⤵️

I check my balance from time to time (thanks @DistroKid !), to see how much I earned from streaming platform services so far, as I'm often asked about it. It's more like having fun, I'm far from a full time musician and (thankfully) don't rely on music for income.

I found out something today. Let's dive into the reality of independent artists earnings ⤵️
