I agree. Cummings is a total disgrace. I am one of many who obeyed lockdown rules to the letter, not visiting my dying mother, missing her final moments, not holding a proper funeral. Should I have listened to my « instinct » too? My unspent grief has turned to a kind of fury.

M - I can’t wait to see Meteora again. Once upon a time there were 24 monasteries on top of these lofty pinnacles (Isolation in the extreme). A phenomena that has to be seen to be believed.

I... can’t wait to see Ithaka, home of Odysseus, again. In a word it is idyllic. The poet Cavafy led me there last autumn with his exquisite metaphorical verse (named “Ithaka”) and I fell in love with it. Both the journey and the destination were beyond compare.

Today is N! Can’t wait to see Naxos again. I even miss the simple aesthetics of a hardware store. Loved this one in the mountain village of Filoti, and in a nearby taverna tasted the perfect myzithra cheese. N is for nostalgia - for absolutely everything Greek.

E today! And I can’t wait to see Ermoupolis again. Capital of Syros, it’s the grandest of all towns in the Cyclades, with its elegant mansions and many buildings that survive from the Venetian period. Beautiful.

Z...this spectacular shipwreck in Zakynthos made a huge impression on me. Washed up there in a storm in 1980, the MV Panayiotis sits rusting on the beach. Feeling a little stranded today, so it struck me as a metaphorical image to end on. A-Z recommences tomorrow with: MUSIC!

U...I can’t wait to revisit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Delos. Birthplace of Artemis and Apollo, it was a shrine to the latter from the 8th c BC.Once a sacred treasury, it’s now a treasure trove of archaeological finds, uninhabited except for cats and figures such as these.

KK today...can’t wait to visit Kouphonisi again, smallest of the inhabited Cyclades, with Keros (opposite). I loved these cairns - a gentle way of marking a visit, an impermanent signature. Kouphonisi is a jewel, small enough to walk all the way round, with turquoise seas.

J..I can’t wait to revisit the Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki - and also to see the project for the new Holocaust Museum unfold. The plans are stunning and a fitting memorial to the 60,000 Jews of the city who were deported to the camps in 1943 and never returned.
