Yes, if you want to collect sooner and, more importantly for longer, you get less per month. There are very few simpler concepts.
If you choose to receive Social Security early you take a hit on that payment. Government decides what retirement age is FOR US and then they punish us with lesser payments if we don't agree. They take money from us our entire lives, call it 'security' and then dictate.
