South Carolina football has lacked a consistent identity, top-tier success, or a Heisman-level player. At the FCS level, the team could dominate opponents and actually contend for national title, something almost impossible in the current FBS landscape for a program like USC.

Moving to FCS could free up millions of dollars annually that could be reinvested into academic programs, or olympic sports that have more potential for national success. In a sense, student debt and educational outcomes are more important than maintaining a 6-6 football team.

Dropping to the FCS level could allow the university to maintain a football program, reduce expenses, and compete for championships rather than remain a mid-to-lower tier program in the toughest conference.

USC has consistently underperformed relative to its SEC peers despite enormous financial investment in coaching salaries, facilities, and recruiting. South Carolina has never won an SEC championship and rarely finishes near the top of the division.
