Presented my work (w/ @pavellogacev) in #HSP2023! I talk about how gram. asymmetry is still a thing, but it is kind of sneaky. Even though we have very persistent effects in ungrammatical sentences, attraction in grammatical sentences are unpredictable, even with response bias!

Just updated my website! (i) I was bored of the uniform academic website look. (ii) I also wanted to write some more blog posts and make my website around blogs. https://t.co/zaulLq22or Hopefully will be sharing blogposts soon!

For example, syncretism in Turkish does not seem to matter for attraction, but I do not have a data with overt determiner. The data we used allowed us to not use determiners, and words can be either plural or singular without determiners.

English is a language that syncretism matter, and also the {the/a} difference, at least anecdotally. It would be nice to see if (i) there is an experimental data on {a/an} and there are other languages that can be placed in this scale.

Maybe this follows the cut in syncretism? Attraction seems to be affected by distinctive case marking in a subset of languages. French is not one of them, the distinct determiner marking seems to be not disallow attraction.

Just anecdotally, it seems like English speakers detects it faster when I ask them compared to {the} cases. Why would that be the case? Maybe {a} gives a lot of information that {the} does not? But then what about all these Romance languages where every determiner is informative?

Does anyone have any data/pointers for agreement attraction in English with indefinite markers {a/an}?

Excited to share my new preprint! Extending prior work on visual working memory load, we showed that speech-induced mental imagery load during eye closure also similarly suppresses posterior alpha power, suggesting a shared pointer system across vision and language.

Restrictions have been placed on entering and exiting Istanbul and ban on all demonstrations and events extended to 27 March as protests continue to build around the detention of Istanbul's mayor, who is scheduled to appear before a prosecutor tonight.

@UtkuTurkLing imagine having so much charisma you dictate verbal agreement in the Turkish language

With informal addressees, people made attraction errors in both grammatical and ungrammatical sentences, suggesting that lack of effect in grammatical sentences is not due to agreement computation, but just an experimental by-product, a ceiling effect.

More specifically, I used register facts to induce attraction in grammatical sentences without between-subject design. Formal addressee increased the acceptability, and Informal addressee (and register incongruency) decreased overall acceptability in grammatical sentences.

#HSP2025 is next week! Will talk about attraction in Turkish (again 😅). Did you know that the Formal Addressee, not the subject of the sentence, can control the agreement in Turkish? Come listen to me. If you are curious about what would happen in attraction scenarios.

Hi friends! I will be in USC (TU+, March 1-2) presenting my work on register and agreement attraction ( https://t.co/Vll7PqUFIA) along with Turkish covert scrambling ( https://t.co/v7ZJqkBgZ6). Happy to talk about either of these topics!

Turkish, an anti-superiority language, allows for the free scrambling of multiple wh words. However, we present novel data demonstrating superiority effects with adjunct wh-phrases. This superiority effect only manifests when moving to A positions that are not reconstructible.

I and @sadiralarklewis will be giving a talk on Turkish superiority effects at LSA this Sunday. If you’re free and around, let me know!!
