We must demand accountability. Support whistleblowers. Strengthen oversight bodies. Reject VIP culture. Only then can we hope for change.

The result? A city where basic services are lacking, not due to resource scarcity, but because of systemic corruption and mismanagement.

VIP culture exacerbates the problem. Elites receive preferential treatment, while ordinary citizens suffer. This culture stems from colonial times and persists today.

Yet, enforcement is weak. Corruption thrives when oversight bodies are ineffective or complicit.

This isn't just about water. It's about a system where rules exist but are ignored by those in power for personal gain. The Sindh Enquiries and Anti-Corruption Act, 1991, was meant to prevent this.

The water mafia isn't new. For years, illegal hydrants have operated with impunity, often with the backing of influential figures.

Despite threats and bribe offers, Baig reported these illegal activities. Instead of being commended, he was suspended. This is how whistleblowers are treated.

Meet Mirza Ikhlaq Baig, a former Assistant Director at Karachi Water & Sewerage Corporation. He uncovered over 100 illegal water connections in the SITE area, siphoning off water meant for the public.
