Now more than ever, we need research that will help us prepare for the extreme events that have become commonplace in today’s world. This piece explores how our @UoMCDMPS disaster modelling could help us build a more disaster-resilient future: https://t.co/DhEMGuobZF.

Today is the tenth anniversary of Black Saturday. We remember the people who died, and those whose lives changed forever. We also remember the emergency services, the agencies, and the volunteers who helped with an event that was too great to deal with alone. We remember.

A/Prof Janet Stanley can talk about how we’ve developed a much more targeted response to bushfire and a reduction in the number of deaths as a result of bushfire with a greater move to protect people and property. She can also talk about the areas where improvement is needed.

“Most transformations require altering, or rewiring, the way that power and resources are structured and how they move through societies.” How do we rewire power dynamics & resource management in practice to prevent the dominance of developed nations over #sustainabledevelopment?

Moving from “doing less badly” to “sustainability”: It’s time to start thinking about development that benefits both people and the planet. It’s time to talk about transformation, and changing the way we change. https://t.co/1XrCRv8QlT

According to @unisdr 87% of disaster-related spending goes on response, reconstruction & rehabilitation. Just 13% goes towards managing the root risks which cause disasters in the first place. It would be much cheaper to invest in #resilience #SendaiFramework
