(7/7) Pretend, a modern tale & true to life story which very much deserves further life. This simple seated reading shines light on the brilliant text & is lifted off the page tremendously by a skilled cast.

There is a moment in the play where each character comes together in order to help & support Sophie (Holly Chidley) through a life-threatening tragedy, which is a heartfelt reflection of true friendship.

…the sweet & at times naïve Cat. (A grounded yet captivating Harriett O'Grady) Although only a staged reading, LaFrance manages to wholly embody the character and masterfully navigate her complexities. One would hope for a full run just to see her character come to life entirely

However, as good as the ensemble are, there is a clear standout, Anna Elise LaFrance, who plays the complex character Holly. She excels in finding balance between the comedic relief & portraying a character who is (spoiler alert) cheating on her girlfriend…

The text is a witty & accurate reflection of life, we are immersed, immediately. The driving theme of the play is ambition and also the challenges that this brings.   The cast are a marvel, props to the producers or whoever was in charge of bringing these four actors together.

The set in this simplistic black box theatre is 4 chairs, with stalls placed behind them so that the actors can ‘Exit’, which is simple yet extremely helpful for the audience. This helped to make a clear distinction to who is ‘on stage’ and what we need to focus on.
