A message from Emma Thompson 💙💛
Last week one of our team members, Olha, ran into acclaimed British actor Emma Thompson. Olha, who manages our English school for displaced Ukrainians, asked Emma to record a short message of support for Ukraine and Ukrainians.
Here it is.
90 years ago, the Stalinist regime attempted to starve Ukrainians into subjugation through a man-made famine, the Holodomor.
Today, the Kremlin once again uses hunger as a weapon in its full-scale war against Ukraine.
Today, on 1 January 2024, Victoria Amelina would have turned 38. She was killed in the Russian missile strike in June 2023. Read her work and tributes to her memory in our
@ukrlondonreview
and continue Victoria’s legacy.
“Ukraine is fighting against empire. And the history of Russian oppression of Ukraine goes back centuries. Ukraine’s victory needs to mean end of Russian impunity, the end of the Russian empire.”
@olgatokariuk
in conversation with

at
@EPinUK
“There can be no sustainable peace without justice. Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 & then missiles from Crimea reached Syria and Ukraine. Ceding more territory will only encourage more aggression. We must break the circle of impunity”
@avalaina
“Whilst reporting on the war I have met Greeks, Romas, Jews, Azerbaijanis, Armenians, Bulgarians, Georgians. All of them tell me ‘this is my country’ and speak some words of Ukrainian to me in solidarity. Even I did not previously realise how multicultural Ukraine.”
@ngumenyuk
Victoria Amelina has been among the most powerful voices telling international audiences about Ukraine's literature and Russia's war crimes. A huge loss for Ukraine and the world. As we mourn her death, our thoughts are with Victoria's family and friends.
Join us to remember Victoria Amelina, a Ukrainian writer and war crimes investigator killed by a Russian attack.
Friends, colleagues, & translators of

“Kharkiv is known as Ukraine’s cleanest city & people are proud of this. Now when shelling is extremely serious, rubbish collectors continue to clean up 90% of city. This means so much to Kharkivites that people go out to help. I’m so struck by how Ukrainians keep going”
