#RIP Edgar Harrell and James W. Smith who both died this past week. The men were 2 of the last 7 survivors of the sinking of USS Indianapolis in 1945. After the Indy was sunk, the men had to endure 4 days of exposure and shark attacks. Only 316 of the crew of 1,195 survived.

Part of the dive on the Sammy B. It appears her bow hit the seafloor with some force, causing some buckling. Her stern also separated about 5 meters on impact, but the whole wreck was together. This small ship took on the finest of the Japanese Navy, fighting them to the end.

#OTD Feb. 28, 1945, during the Battle of Iwo Jima, Pharmacist's Mate 1st Class John Willis pushed to the front lines to aid a fallen Marine, returning 8 enemy grenades before being killed by the 9th. He was later awarded the Medal of Honor. USS John Willis honored the WWII hero.

#OTD in 1942, the " #DoolittleRaid " on Japan took place. Conceived in January 1942 following the devastating surprise attack on #PearlHarbor , the “joint Army-Navy bombing project” was to bomb Japanese industrial centers, to inflict both “material and psychological” damage.

Gemini 6 is launched #OTD in 1965. Capt. Walter M. Schirra, Jr. is command pilot and Thomas P. Stafford is the pilot. The mission included 16 orbits in 25 hours and 51 minutes. HS-11 helicopters from USS Wasp (CVS 18) execute the recovery. @NASAhistory
