Edgar Harrell and James W. Smith who both died this past week. The men were 2 of the last 7 survivors of the sinking of USS Indianapolis in 1945. After the Indy was sunk, the men had to endure 4 days of exposure and shark attacks. Only 316 of the crew of 1,195 survived.

and team located the wreck of USS Samuel B. Roberts (DE 413), which is now the deepest shipwreck ever located and surveyed.
The video below is incredible and shows so much detail from the shipwreck. Check it out!
Part of the dive on the Sammy B. It appears her bow hit the seafloor with some force, causing some buckling. Her stern also separated about 5 meters on impact, but the whole wreck was together. This small ship took on the finest of the Japanese Navy, fighting them to the end.

On Dec. 14, 1944, 78 years ago, an act of Congress established the rank of Fleet Admiral, U.S. Navy, (five stars). The first five-star admirals were Adm. Leahy, Adm. King, and Adm. Nimitz. Adm. Halsey joined the select group on Dec. 11, 1945.

Lt. Col. Richard Cole, the last surviving member of the

, has passed away at the age of 103.
As a 26-year-old, Cole was the co-pilot of the No. 1 bomber during the raid on the Japanese mainland in 1942.

Feb. 28, 1945, during the Battle of Iwo Jima, Pharmacist's Mate 1st Class John Willis pushed to the front lines to aid a fallen Marine, returning 8 enemy grenades before being killed by the 9th. He was later awarded the Medal of Honor. USS John Willis honored the WWII hero.
