A tale of two fishes that got into hot water. 🐟🥵💧. This report describes reduced streamflow, especially during summer months, in a section of the lower Virgin River often results in warmer water temps, making stressful conditions for native fish. @blmnv.

Devils Hole, in Death Valley National Park, is a “unique indicator of seismic activity around the world”. The earthquake in Russia yesterday is clearly observed in our continuous water level measurements at Devils Hole & in a nearby #groundwater well.

Streamflow can increase at alarming rates and carry various debris during monsoon storms. USGS does our best to safely monitor these flows, where we have established sites.

Debris flows are dangerous land & water flows caused by heavy rain over steep terrain & loose-bare soil. Flash flooding & debris flows are common in/near wildfire burn scars, so unfortunately much of the Southwest is susceptible to impacts. #Monsoon2k25. #azwx #nvwx #cawx

The dry streambed of Mill Creek near Battle Mountain may not appear exciting, but zero flow is still recorded in the official data record. It is a snapshot of the local environment and holds value to water resource managers. 10326825:

Monsoon Season is Jun 15-Sep 30. That doesn’t mean that thunderstorms will suddenly begin developing on these dates, but this is when to stay alert & aware of monsoon hazards from potential storms. Stay tuned as we explore these monsoon hazards! #Monsoon2k25. #azwx #nvwx #cawx

This curious little amphibian was found near our Meadow Valley Wash gage. We'd like to think his prominent eyes are fixed on the awesome USGS water data being collected, but maybe it's just the classic “deer in the headlights” look?. 09418700:
