The artillerymen fired a last ceremonial round at 1100 to mark the occasion. The remaining soldiers and most of the heavy equipment traveled to the city by vehicle, handing over the firebase to soldiers from the South Vietnamese 3d ID as they departed. #ArmyHistory

By the summer of 1972 the withdrawal from Vietnam was in its final phase, and TF GIMLET was the only U.S. ground combat unit still in the field. On 10 AUG 1972, 4 UH-1 “Huey” helicopters extracted most of the soldiers from Hill 260 and flew them to the airbase in Da Nang.

The task force operated from Hill 260 on the outskirts of Da Nang, the largest city and the principal port in the northern half of South Vietnam. Its mission was to defend the city and its large airbase from enemy units operating in the nearby hills and valleys.

Known as the “Gimlets,” a nickname the regiment acquired in the 1920s for its sporting prowess while posted in Hawaii, the men of the 3d BTLN had teamed with the gunners from Battery B, 3d BTLN, 82d Art., as Task Force GIMLET since JUN 1972. #Americal #ArmyAviation.

@USArmy @TRADOC The rebels counterattacked but failed to break through the U.S. lines in three attempts that day. After being wounded twice during the battle, Lyon was killed while trying to rally his troops. In the meantime, rebel forces routed Sigel’s column, south of Skegg’s Branch.

@USArmy @TRADOC Initially caught by surprise, the rebel cavalry received the first blow and withdrew from a ridge later named Bloody Hill, but other Confederate forces soon rushed to the scene and stabilized their positions.

10 AUGUST 1861 – BATTLE OF WILSON'S CREEK . After defeating pro-Southern militia in a series of small engagements, BG Nathaniel Lyon’s U.S. Army of the West engaged secessionist forces at Wilson’s Creek in the first major battle in the Civil War’s Trans-Mississippi Theater.

@TRADOC @USArmy By 5 OCT, the offensive broke through the Hindenburg Line, and Allied forces advanced through open country to the Oise-Somme Canal on 19 OCT. The U.S. II Corps was relieved on 21 OCT after 26 days in the line and suffered 11,500 casualties.

The British Fourth Army, with the U.S. 33d and 80th DIV attached, attacked the northwestern edge of the salient. To achieve maximum surprise, and contrary to standard procedure, no rolling artillery barrage preceded the advancing infantry to not forewarn the enemy.

8 AUGUST - 11 NOVEMBER 1918 – ANGLO-AMERICAN SOMME OFFENSIVE. On 8 AUG the British, bolstered by fresh units from the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF), began limited operations with the objective of flattening the Amiens salient as it sought to reverse German gains.
