This joint project between UN-Habitat Jordan and the @GAMtweets, generously supported by the Government of Japan, is a powerful example of how sustainable, nature-based solutions can help cities like Amman build resilience and better manage the growing threat of flash floods.

The Al Zohour Green Triangle is Amman’s first pilot of green infrastructure for flash flood resilience, combining bioretention basins, green drainage corridors, and an underground water tank.

يشكّل هذا المشروع المشترك بين برنامج الأمم المتحدة للمستوطنات البشرية في الأردن وأمانة عمّان، وبدعم من حكومة اليابان، مثالًا حيًّا على دور الحلول المستدامة القائمة على الطبيعة في تعزيز قدرة ال��دن مثل عمّان على التكيّف ومواجهة خطر الفيضانات المفاجئة بشكل أكثر فعالية واستدامة.

في قلب عمّان، ولدت مساحة خضراء ذكية تساهم في الحد من الفيضانات وتعيد الحياة للماء. مثلث الزهور الأخضر هو أول نموذج للبنية التحتية الخضراء لمقاومة الفيضانات المفاجئة في المدينة، يجمع بين الأحواض البيئية، وممرات التصريف الخضراء، وخزان المياه تحت الأرض.

This process is supported jointly by UN-Habitat and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UNESCWA)

The report builds on participatory data collection and validation related to 8 Sustainable Development Goals, to come up with actionable recommendations consistent with the local priorities and context.

It aligns with national frameworks such as Jordan’s National Urban Policy and the Economic Modernization Vision, and is guided by global frameworks including the Urban Monitoring Framework and the VLR/VNR processes.

During the meeting, UN-Habitat Jordan team emphasized that the VLR is not a stand-alone exercise but part of a broader commitment by the city to sustainable urban development.

The meeting brought together stakeholders from the public and private sectors, government institutions, and academia.

As part of its continued support to the localization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), UN-Habitat Jordan participated in a consultative meeting organized by the Greater Amman Municipality to review progress on Amman’s Second Voluntary Local Review (VLR).

ويأتي هذا الدعم في إطار التعاون القائم مع لجنة الأمم المتحدة الاقتصادية والاجتماعية لغربي آسيا (الإسكوا).

ويستند التقرير إلى جمع البيانات والتحقق منها بطريقة تشاركية تتعلق بثمانية من أهداف التنمية المستدامة، وذلك بهدف الخروج بتوصيات قابلة للتنفيذ ومتوافقة مع الأولويات والسياق المحلي.

وأكد فريق موئل الأمم المتحدة خلال الاجتماع أن عملية إعداد التقرير تمثل امتدادًا لالتزام مدينة عمّان بالتنمية الحضرية المستدامة، وتنسجم مع الأطر الوطنية مثل الرؤية الاقتصادية الحديثة والسياسة الحضرية الوطنية، إلى جانب مواءمتها مع الأطر العالمية.

وذلك بحضور شركاء من القطاعين العام والخاص، وممثلين عن الوزارات والهيئات الرسمية والجامعات.

في إطار دعم جهود توطين أهداف التنمية المستدامة على المستوى المحلي، شارك فريق برنامج الأمم المتحدة للمستوطنات البشرية في الأردن (الموئل) في الاجتماع التشاوري الذي عقدته أمانة عمّان الكبرى لمتابعة إعداد الاستعراض الطوعي المحلي الثاني (VLR) لمدينة عمّان،.ESCWA).

This initiative was implemented under the “Resilient Water Solutions Against Climate Change in Jordan and Lebanon” project, led by UN-Habitat and funded by the Adaptation Fund, with UNICEF serving as the implementing partner under UN-Habitat’s technical supervision.

As a significant step toward promoting sustainability and addressing climate change challenges, 35 greywater treatment systems installed in schools across Irbid and Mafraq were officially handed over to the Ministry of Education in Jordan.
