“You, the people of Suku Valley, have proved that it's possible to break the cycle of violence. You have learned to resolve differences with words, not weapons. This marketplace is a visible symbol of that,” said the 🇬🇧 High Commissioner to #PNG, H.E. @AnneMacroUK at the opening.

From 2019–2023, a major conflict involving 9 clans displaced 40,000+ people & destroyed the old market in Suku Valley. In 2023, @UNDP & the Catholic Diocese of Mendi succesfully mediated a peace agreement with the clans with the UK's 🇬🇧 & @UNPeacebuilding Fund's support.

This week, @UNDP & the British High Commission🇬🇧 opened a new market in Suku Valley, Southern Highlands Province! 🍠🍍🍌 . After years of conflict and displacement, the valley is rebuilding — starting with community spaces like this. ☮️

“A peace agreement is not just words on paper, it is a promise to your children that they grow up safely and promise to each other that the future will be built on cooperation, not conflict,” added the British High Commissioner, H.E. @AnneMacroUK.

“Twice in the past, we tried to settle this conflict on our own without success. It was only after UNDP came to our aid that we were able to unite again and set aside our differences," stated the Councilor for Hupa 2, Mr James Alo, during the signing ceremony.

The conflict in Hupa had been ongoing since 1997. Over 5,000 people were displaced and homes and gardens were destroyed by the conflict. The peace agreement was made possible through the persistent mediation efforts of @UNDP & the Catholic Church, with 🇬🇧 & 🇪🇺 support.

After almost 30 years, peace has finally returned to Hupa, Southern Highlands! ☮️. This week, @UNDP welcomed 🇬🇧 High Commissioner, H.E. @AnneMacroUK & UK ISF Pacific Head Josh Kemp to witness a historic peace agreement between the Puir & Murupe clans.

To celebrate #EuropeDay this year, UNDP proudly showcased the successes of its @EUinPNG-funded projects at the EU Global Gateway Exhibition in Port Moresby! 🇪🇺

Mr. Booth also met with Sister Lorraine Garasu of the Nazareth Centre for Rehabilitation to discuss their ongoing efforts to address #GBV & sorcery accusation-related violence, and ways to strengthen women's role in grassroots peacebuilding efforts.

To support this vision, @UNDP has built 3 Innovation Hubs in Bougainville! Mr. Booth toured the nearly completed solar-powered hub in Kieta with Minister Geraldine Paul. The hub will feature:. 🔹A women's micro bank.🔹Computer lab with @Starlink connection.🔹Training room

Ahead of the summit, Mr. Booth met with President Ishmael Toroama to reaffirm UNDP’s commitment to women’s empowerment in Bougainville and to explore ways to boost financing for women-led businesses and local economic growth.

This week, our UNDP Resident Representative, @nickcongly, will be attending the UN’s first-ever Women, Peace & Security Summit in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville. 🚺☮️. Nearly 200 women leaders will be gathering to shape women's role in peacebuilding across the island.

For three days, representatives from the Government, the private sector & civil society devises solutions to challenges ranging from youth unemployment to firearms proliferation. Our @UNDP Resident Representative, @nickcongly, participated a vibrant debate on anti-corruption.

Last week, our @EUinPNG -funded ‘Transparency and Accountability in PNG’ supported in facilitating Papua New Guinea’s National Development Forum for 2025. This year, the forum focused on issues related to rule of law in #PapuaNewGuinea🇵🇬.
