We’re hearing from multiple grad student workers
@UVA
that they haven’t been paid their stipends for December. This is an unacceptable sign of neglect and disrespect. If you’re a UVA grad student/worker and haven’t been paid, DM or reply! Your union wants to hear from you.
We're proud to share that as a result of us taking collective action, some grad student workers have started to get their payments today! We're encouraged that UVA admin has started to move on this. However, there are further concrete steps that need to be taken.

Dear
@UVA_College
: Yesterday, Rosa H. led a delegation of 23 UVAers + 3
@vcuworkers
. We delivered a petition w/ 230 signatures of UVAers. Graduate Student Workers deserve Respect & Fair Deal. Honor Rosa's service and vision! Reinstate Rosa's Ph.D Advisor!
#ReinstateForRosa
Just watched the UVA Faculty Senate EXCO emergency meeting spend an hour blowing smoke up Jim Ryan's butt -- before/during/after he was unapologetic about bringing violence to campus Saturday. 🧵
We asked UVA’s Executive Admin to assign a rep to meet us Mon, 10am. We intend to a) ask them listen to our experience, b) confirm a plan for everyone to receive stipend, c) ensure a *simple* process for receiving reimbursement for housing costs incurred. Will update on Insta.
In sum: upper admin is grossly out of touch, they're kept that way by only ever hearing compliments, and if you want to see any change at UVA, it's time to organize. Pledge to withhold your grades to demand amnesty:
This May Day, we the graduate student workers of
@UCWVA
at the University of Virginia are launching a campaign for respect and a fair deal in the workplace. JOIN US! 1/
1/ This past week, grad student workers at UVA successfully organized a coalition of ourselves, other UVA employees, under students, and alumni to call on UVA executive administration to
#CutTheChecks
.
Rosa, a Grad Student Worker passionate about her academics, selected her Ph.D Advisor deliberately. When UVA Admin unilaterally removed her advisor, Rosa decided to organize. 2 delegations, 250 + petition signatures,+ solidarity from
@UVA_YDS
&
@vcuworkers
. We won reinstatement!
JOIN YOUR COLLEAGUES. WITHHOLD GRADES. DEMAND AMNESTY.
On Saturday, May 4, UVA exec admin stood by while state police cracked down on a peaceful gathering. The aim of the protest was for UVA to disclose where state and tuition dollars go, and sever ties... (1/2)
Today, state police in riot gear violently broke up the UVa encampment for divestment from genocide. They pepper sprayed and arrested university students and workers. We must continue to organize to change the power structures allowing this.
This is now an appreciation thread for Brian Pusser's guts: "I don't know how you can be raised on the Boston tea party from the first grade and then told not to put a tent by your chapel in college"
🚨 BREAKING NEWS 🚨
Grad workers at UVA continue to be paid late. Join us for our December 6th town hall on why executive administration at UVA can't

*Jan 3rd Meeting to
#CutTheChecks
*: Yesterday, Provost Baucom promised to dedicate resources to solving the late stipend problem, but wouldn't commit to a timeline. Collective action got us this far, but we'll stay vigilant to make sure he follows through.
Congrats to the tuition freeze campaign on successfully winning a tuition freeze for all
@UVA
students!! 🎉 This is what we're capable of when we organize for the long term and keep the pressure up. Onward to more victories! 💖🥳
btw this is the same Longo who felt 10/10 threatened by his community members (peaceful protestors) putting out a social media call for more of his community members (UVA folks) to join them... which is a weird thing to be threatened by, if you've spent a lot of time together
BREAKING: Workers at Bodo's Bagels in Charlottesville are unionizing!
Join us for a press conference on Wednesday to hear from Bodo's workers, local elected officials and community leaders supporting the effort:
Shoutout to Brian Pusser, hero of the hour, not swallowing the narrative that students put up tents and therefore deserve pepper spray and arrest: "when there are asymmetries in power and you don't follow the rules, you will never get equality"
Therefore, we will be showing up first thing at 10am on Monday, January 2nd, at UVA’s Student Financial Services office. We have emailed the relevant Provosts and President Jim Ryan that we expect them to send a special representative to meet us who is prepared to:
Given that this is not the first time UVA’s executive administration has failed to pay grad workers on time, we demand systemic changes to ensure this will not happen again.
We're out in front of Old Cabell Hall tonight ahead of
@BernieSanders
' visit to UVA, to once again ask you to join your campus workers' union! Are you angry about capitalism? UNIONIZE!
#CampusWorkers4Democracy
Shoutout also to Jennifer Greeson for having the courage to observe that post-May 4, exec admin is pushing a fear-driven narrative of being scared of students; needing protection; needing training to break up student protests...
Graduate workers play a huge role in shaping undergraduate experience & expanding knowledge at UVA. Yet, it's a fight for the pay raise + insurance we need. It doesn't have to be this way. Through our union, we're building worker power. -
@HuelsmanKelsey
"I don't think there is a leader who has built community as well as Jim has" -- if you think exec admin is starting to see the error of their ways, think again! They're surrounded by people who simply echo their own lies back to them
Today at noon, a delegation of graduate student worker members of
@UCWVAUVA
met with Provost Baucom about our ongoing collective effort to end graduate worker wage insecurity at UVA.
#CutTheChecksUVA
We’re happy to report that Del.
@SallyLHudson
& Sen.
@CreighDeeds
responded immediately and reached out to UVA’s executive administration for answers. Sen. Deeds indicated he would push for our members to be included on any task force. We’ll follow up with both and share updates.
Today, Rosa H. led a 12 person delegation, delivering 130 signatures to History Dept. Chair Prof. Harold & Dean Barnaby calling for UVA Admin to honor Rosa's years of service & a previous commitment made that she select her PhD advisor.

Graduate student workers at UVA’s School of Architecture (

Today, we showed up to Provost Ian Baucom’s office to demand UVA
#CutTheChecks
. He wasn’t there. But his office committed to a meeting at 3p tomorrow (1/3). We’ll be there! We need a simple system for UVA to cover cost from late rent + a plan to ensure this doesn’t happen again.
UVA BOV scheduled to meet at 10am. The "" link to stream the open portion of their session is broken. Most of their agenda is a briefing behind closed doors. No public comment. We can safely assume that the BOV will not be hearing the truth today
3 Ensure there is a simple process for grad workers to access additional funds to cover penalties and late payments they’ve accrued due to missing income. This process should not be overly time consuming or prohibitive in any way.
1 Listen to the way graduate student workers have been affected by the delayed payments
2 Tell us what concrete steps are being taken to ensure this doesn’t happen again, &
In the coming weeks, we’re sure to hear a lot more apologies and explanations from Ryan’s team. They’ll be meaningless so long as NTOs, charges, and internal judicial proceedings remain in place.
Today a delegation of graduate workers joined UVa's Board of Visitors meeting to remind them that the systemic issue of late (and incorrect) payments continues to impact us every month. UVa relies on us for research, undergraduate instruction, and its information infrastructure
“... active, vocal protests and expressive activity went forward. We did not and will not seek to shut these down.” Is the bar so low that we have to congratulate admin for simply allowing free speech to occur at UVA?
Total vibe shift after Ryan, Longo, and Baucom leave the room. Senators worry that faculty are now stuck being tasked with keeping undergrads calm and moving on. Which is true. And faculty will have to refuse that role if we are to have any hope of justice here
Senators seemed worried that just anyone can walk into commencement. One senator said people would not feel unsafe if snipers were on the roof, but UVA should notify people if they will be there, so people present at May 4th don't get 'emotionally triggered'
The point of enrolling in a program that provides a stipend is to give us financial security while we do work that benefits the university. We shouldn't have to rely on food banks & rental assistance to meet basic needs.

from today’s delegation.
#CutTheChecks
...Which is exactly the narrative you would use if you jumped to wildly excessive violence, everyone saw it, and then you needed to justify the extreme asymmetry
Baucom claimed that he “ached” and that “there are many things that (he replays) in (his) head.” Longo said that he “spent almost 20 years on the streets of Baltimore” but was afraid of the protests, “because the tone was changing.” (Does this mean umbrellas were opened?)
"I'm excited President Ryan is going to meet with us because it gives me hope that UVa is finally taking this issue seriously. Missing paychecks and incorrect pay is not a one-time mistake, but something that has happened to me every one of the five years ...
We know rent is due soon & budgets are tight. Cville grad workers in need of a food pantry, see: (open Wednesday & Friday). More options here:
For Richmond, see:
"In 2017, I joined

Listen:
When asked about civil disobedience, Ryan stated that “I have no judgments of character about any of the students, I just wish they had made different decisions.” Ryan could, at any time, make the decision to grant them amnesty.
One senator who attended the faculty-led Honest Town Hall today observed, verbatim, as if they were totally equal, that “people in power had one interpretation, people on the ground had another” GEE I WONDER WHY
A religious studies professor said that “our faculty were there to be calm, to be reasoned, to wipe pepper spray out of the eyes of students” Despite this, the faculty members were still violently detained, and still face judicial proceedings and active NTOs from UVA.
At our upcoming Lobby Day this Tuesday (1/17), we’ll be urging our legislators to vote YES on Sen
@CreighDeeds
’s bill SB1307! We’re excited to have worked with Sen Deeds’s office on this legislation, which ensures faculty & staff representation on the
@UVA
Board of Visitors.
"I’m excited President Ryan has agreed to meet with UCWVA-UVA because I love my undergraduate students, and in order to teach as well as possible, I need to be paid on time."
-Katherine Churchill, graduate worker
Equitable, clear, and on-time payments are not unreasonable requests. UVA's graduate workers keep it running. Read (and sign!) our letter (linked below) to learn more.

UVA hospital is understaffed & forcing workers to take more shifts. How did we get here? Well, when the pandemic came UVA furloughed staff, froze hiring, & cut pay. We support workers' demand for full hazard pay and more. Thanks

UCWVA members and union-curious UVA employees!! Come celebrate May Day next Weds! We'll meet outside Special Collections at 5pm, walk through the union exhibit together, discuss, and head to Crozet Pizza afterward for a good old Drank & File ✊🍻
Word is trickling in from the graduate school of A&S about a PAY RAISE for grad students next year - 26K and 28K for humanities/social sciences and hard sciences respectively. We can assume our grad worker campaign is to thank! We aren’t celebrating yet, though. Here’s why:
Cecelia and John meet with Del. Amy Laufer to discuss her bill that will require faculty and staff representatives on the Board of Visitors for Virginia’s state universities!
#CampusWorkers4Democracy
UPDATE: in addition, a student's hearing is at 10am in city court. Plan to stay and DRESS SHARP for the trial instead of t-shirts. Meet outside at 8:50 to walk in together. No phones, food, or drink in the courtrooms (bags fine but will be searched)
It is clearer than ever that we must keep each other safe. Join us in your union shirt or wearing bright red to show unity and give the unjustly jailed the best chance of being released.
In a unanimous 7-0 vote, Albemarle County School Board PASSED a Collective Bargaining Resolution tonight! So proud of our AEA team that fought for this.

Speaking of changes for the better, yesterday at the BOV meeting, Jim Ryan committed to meeting with graduate workers organizing to put an end to late payments. He said, “we don’t leave the room until we find the solution.” (1/2)
Despite promises that
@UVA
would fix payment problems for graduate workers, workers continue to report late and/or incorrect payments at the start of the spring semester. Has UVA messed up your payments? DM us or let us know here:
We’re proud that our collective action resulted in creation of a task force. It’s the first time UVA has marshaled an institutional response to this recurring problem, and it’s because grad workers came together & organized to demand better.

Ep.2:
UCWVA-UVA is a proud partner of UVAAD: we deserve to know where tuition and state dollars are going, and we deserve a say in how our workplace carries out its mission of serving the public good. Including saying that genocide is not a public good.
In April, UVA's Jim Ryan agreed to sit down with a student divestment group that had been trying to meet with him for months. But after Saturday and the town hall, they changed their plan.
“President Ryan, your students are waiting for you outside.”

When pressed about whether the faculty members who were arrested were considered continued threats to the community, given their active no trespass orders (NTOs), executive admin demurred.
Cecelia: "I fight for union rights because I want to be able to afford to live where I work... I fight for union rights because I want to get the best possible care at UVA hospital... because I want to bargain for free tuition for my students..."
Thank you

Senators are predicting there will be a motion to censure or to take a vote of no confidence in senior admin at Faculty Senate tomorrow, and saying they have to make space for it to happen or they'll get "hung out to dry for it"...
Imagine a UVA where Admin doesn't get to do whatever it wants, to whomever it wants, no matter the consequence.
Rosa deserves the Ph.D Advisor that will support her producing the best work.

It’s been heartening to see UVA faculty post in support of grad workers’
#cutthechecks
struggle. One of the most consequential things faculty can do to support these efforts is join our wall-to-wall union. We’re
#InThisTogether
and we know it!
At the same time, Longo implied that Virginia State Police were only called once negotiations with UVA’s police failed and protestors failed. However, unmarked cars, police vans, and riot gear were spotted at least an hour before...
Did the students furlough staff and hospital workers? Did the students cut wages, freeze hiring, and deny hazard pay? Did the students write the reckless reopening policies? No. UVA admin has no one to blame but itself.
BREAKING: UVA bans all in-person gatherings, urges students to remain at home and restrict movement to essential activities. The policy will go into effect at 7 p.m. tonight and will be reevaluated Feb. 26.
When Exec Admin like Baucom work hard for UVA, they can expect to be paid well, and paid on time.
When grad workers like Crystalina work hard for UVA, they can expect to be paid less than a living wage, and--all too often--to receive that money late. (📸:

It is clearer than ever that we must keep each other safe. Join us in your union shirt or wearing bright red to show unity and give the unjustly jailed the best chance of being released.
UVA’s willingness to concretely address this chronic problem is a direct result of us standing together and demanding better. In the past, grad workers who noticed missing payments have been told they would have to simply wait for the next pay period.
When Ryan left, he told faculty they would have more time to ask executive admin questions. When asked to schedule this time, he again demurred, and left the room.
Rosa's organizing was successful because she'd joined with others to build a worker organization pushing for Respect & A Fair Deal for Grad Student Workers. Appreciate UVA Associate Deans being responsive. Together, we'll build
