On Oct. 9, 1872, the cornerstone of South Hall, first building on Cal's campus, was laid. It was originally home to the library & laboratories for agricultural, physical & natural sciences. The UC President's office was there 1899-1906. It's now home to the School of Information.

Helen Wills, Class of 1926, was born October 6, 1905. She was the first internationally famous woman athlete and greatest woman tennis player of her era. Wills won 31 Grand Slam titles and 2 Olympic Gold Medals. Her record of 8 Wimbledon singles titles stood for 60 years.
