5/ The number of students living in unhealthy or unsafe housing situations has risen since last year. 35% of transgender students, 28% of disabled students, and 20% of Indigenous students lived in such conditions within the previous two years.

4/ Disturbingly, 2.3% of students have experienced homelessness since enrolling — rising to 4% of international students, 5% of disabled students, 9% of severely food insecure students, and 6% of non-binary students.

3/ With Alberta's university-age population projected to grow by up to 40% over the next decade, all levels of government face crucial decisions. The availability of affordable housing will determine how many young people can study, work, and remain here in the coming years.

2/ Furthermore, at least 400 students have had no choice but to sleep on campus due to the lack of alternatives. Existing programs fail to address this population effectively, leaving many unaccounted for, even if they experience homelessness without self-identifying.

🧵1/ The University of Alberta Students’ Union is deeply concerned about housing affordability for students. A recent survey indicated that over 200 undergraduates have resorted to living in unsafe places like cars and abandoned buildings since becoming students.
