Saw an article about bar coded self-service fountain drinks. Claimed it was "new as of this year." Didn't know it was still 2022 (first year I saw one of those).

Sometimes you just need to sit back and cut your losses. Someone arguing and being wrong so confidentially will eventually trip up and get in serious trouble.

Eventually I just stopped trying to correct him and worked on other stuff I had to do for long term clients (my VR work mostly). Anyway, about a year later I'm in a panel for Unreal and VP. The guy's boss from earlier was on the panel too. Guess who was let go?

Takes him an hour to realize he was wrong & I was right (Remember, this is a live production, so they just lost a few grand not listening & crew time). But every interaction with the guy was the same, him confidentially screaming and being wrong.

Now this is a no-no. But you know what I'm going to let him founder as I'm literally going to by re-imaging our nodes tomorrow. So he can't do any real damage..

Remembering this dudebro I sit down at the editor node and in less than 1 minute identify the issue (yay for understanding the render pipeline and profiling tools). It's this nanite hero asset... He tells me I'm wrong, screaming at me, and demands to let him use the editor.

So I explain, calmly, that he is misinformed. Even use the examples he cited, in editor and on LED wall to show him. Dude insists he is right still. A month or so later, his boss hires us to do a VP shoot with them. Comes in with their scene... At best 14fps. Average was 6 fps.

Think "You can have as many have as many poly as you want, topography doesn't matter. Occlusion is always fine.." and even gives (incorrect) examples of his statements from the Valley of the Ancients demo. He is getting more irate and louder as he goes.

I'm employed at a studio as an in unreal engineer and world operator. We are giving a demo based on my teaching from earlier to folks from the offline rendering world. This guy precedes to interrupt me via my talk to tell me that I'm wrong about nanite.

Like I helped write the course and delivered a good chunk of the content. I've been hired to come into other studios to fix issues in their understanding of tools (especially around nanite, in it's first two years). So this story is about a colleague, his misplaced confidence...

So this post got me thinking and I want to share a story... I've been doing profissional unreal work for just shy a decade. A few years ago, I begun to do virtual production in unreal & was hired to teach VP. Was even on the team Epic hired to do the masterclassc for broadcast VP
@SmilodonnaVT If I had that many people who were confidently wrong and saying completely dumb stuff in my replies I would maybe consider correcting them a bit

To anyone who cares, I am replacing my computer. I had a 6tb @westerndigital external drive I was using to transfer data. It died in the first 8 hours of use. This is why I don't buy Western Digital (never once had a drive from them last more than a year)

A little sample of what #VirtualProduction in #UnrealEngine5 can do - this was from a production test. It involved the use of a LED volume, live compositing, and Unreal Engine running nDisplay. #MadeWithUnreal

I'm leaving a few bits and bobs out and truncating some stuff. Some by accident (left out ten years of being psychotherapists while also being a lecturer). And I've forgotten about the years of being a short order cook... (Occurring between concession stand and GameStop)

this was a fun shoot to work on. Hard to imagine it was so cold during the shoot, definitely would have had to do it at another time if it wasn't for VP being able to counter weather

Great experience last weekend collaborating with Maplight Filmworks and Resolution Studios. A Virtual Production location shoot on the main stage while it was -27 windchill outdoors. Another benefit of VP - No weather delays. 🥶🎥 #MadeWithUnreal #UnrealEngine5 #virtualProduction
