It’s been almost 2 years since I lost my apartment and my dog Uma in a fire because of the war. With constant blackouts and air raid alarms, rebuilding has been tough. Any ongoing support, no matter how small, would make a huge difference in helping us rebuild and move forward.

“Nimtsi” is an old word for those who speak a foreign tongue and come with force — it has long meant invaders, not a nation. This time, it meant the Ruzians. They got as far as the opposite shore —.but never stepped onto the dam. Someone told them it was mined. And they.

of lakes with dams and long-forgotten water treatment structures —.a strange, silent landscape that dogs seem to read better than people. The locals told us: “The Germans were over there, in the village on the other side.”.But they didn’t mean actual Germans. In Ukrainian,.

A dog on a leash is the best tour guide. They show you what really matters. That’s how we found the dam — deep in the quiet of Bucha district,.near our new home, which we exchanged for the wreckage of an old summer plot the war had left behind. It’s not a river here, but a chain

shchastyt), it became “Нєхуй шастать” (Nekhui shastat) — which roughly means “Don’t fing lurk around.”*. Just one letter changed — and “Let there be luck” becomes “Don’t f***ing lurk.”.Looks similar. Sounds similar. Hits completely differently.

meaning “Good luck.”.But with typical Ukrainian humor, the phrase was slightly reworked — just one letter changed. The altered version was directed not at Russian speakers in general, but specifically at the Russians who invaded Ukraine. Instead of “Нехай щастить” (Nekhai.

It felt impossible — like something too absurd, too extreme to be real. But it happened. And it became exactly what they feared. And one more thing. Very often, when leaving a village or town, you’d see a road sign that said “Нехай щастить!” — a traditional Ukrainian wish.

on Russian kill lists. Before the invasion, some of my friends spoke of strange dreams — of war, of activists being hunted. I couldn’t believe it at the time. It felt like paranoia, like they were just overthinking things. I honestly didn’t think Russia would invade Ukraine.

and houses have appeared. Sometimes I’m not sure where to turn. My last few trips there were all different routes — I kept missing the right turn because there were no signs. And maybe that was for the best. It made things less obvious — and safer — for people who were likely.

it’s hard to find the right turn — especially when even directional signs were taken down from rural intersections. You just don’t know where to go. In recent years, I haven’t been to my father’s place very often, and the road has changed — trees have grown taller, new fences.

On the way to my father’s place. At the beginning of the full-scale invasion, street signs and house numbers were removed from towns and villages. On the roads leading into smaller settlements, the names were painted over or scratched out. If you’re not familiar with the area,

Rumba still has the heart of a child — always smiling and full of joy. Today we visited the vet for a full health check-up. It’s been almost a year since she unexpectedly became a mother, and our little family grew. Since most of my attention went to the puppies, I sometimes

On August 1, 1868, the U.S. issued a $7.2 million treasury check to the Russian Empire for the purchase of Alaska and the Aleutian Islands. Though later framed in Russia as a “friendly gesture” toward the U.S., the real reason was clear: Russia was financially and strategically
