Fascinating conversation with Amanda Cowen and Nicole Montgomery of @UVA on gender and leadership in my class this morning. Thankfully, perceptions of female leaders’ competence have changed, but gender bias continues to be a reality all of us—not just women—need to grapple with.

Big takeaway from my conversation with @michaelsorrell in class today: Being able to lead is being able to change, evolve, and pivot. How do you bring others along during times of transformation? Find messages that resonate and show people that you see them and care for them.

GREAT class with @WalterIsaacson yesterday. We discussed Walter’s own leadership journey, what he learned from other leaders, and how technology has changed our lives and leadership. One of the traits he values most in great leaders: the willingness to admit mistakes.

Kicked off my leadership course at @Tulane with an engaged discussion about the deterioration of civil discourse and the impact on our democracy. According to my students, social media plays a large role. Is the democratization of information ultimately ruining our democracy?

Still trying to find words for Tulane’s Cotton Bowl win against USC yesterday. Stunning, wild, historic, spectacular, incredible… just wow. My heartfelt congrats to all the players, Coach Fritz and all Tulanians. What a start to 2023. Happy New Year, everyone! #RollWave

Congratulations to the Tulane football team and staff for an outstanding year! I’m forever grateful to everyone who made Yulman Stadium and membership in the American Athletic Conference possible and who helped break up the old BCS. #RollWave

I’ve been reflecting on my leadership journey for a potential new book. This Thanksgiving, I’m grateful for my family, friends, and all the people who saw something in me—and had more faith in me than I had in myself—at important turning points in my life. Happy Thanksgiving!

So long, NOLA. My visit to New Orleans was short but sweet. Yesterday, we celebrated the 15-year anniversary of the @CowenInstitute. It was a beautiful reminder of what we have built and accomplished over the years. I can’t wait to be back at @Tulane for the spring semester.

Want to feel more energized and hopeful about the future despite the current state of the world? Spend time with students! Last night, I had a great time talking to a group of Cowen Scholars on the @Tulane campus about leadership and community engagement.

With the midterms less than a month away, I often fear that character and competence aren’t among the attributes voters look for anymore. I hope I’m wrong. Moral integrity and a proven track record of accomplishments should be required of anyone representing us in government.

Someone recently told me that children laugh about 300 times a day and adults only about 17 times. While the science behind this statistic has been debated, it’s safe to say that we adults don’t laugh enough given what’s going on in the world right now. Let's try to do better!

It’s been heartbreaking to see the full extent of devastation from Hurricane Ian over the past days. Every crisis has silver linings, but I know from experience that it’s hard to see them in the brutal early stage of recovery. My heart goes out to everyone impacted by the storm.

Yesterday I received a call from one of my heroes and cherished friend and mentor Dr. Norman Francis. I can’t wait to see the @WYESTV documentary about his inspiring life and exemplary leadership. Tonight at 8pm on WYES-TV, https://t.co/mGGPvecYVg.

Norman Francis, who was Xavier University’s president for 47 years, has a long list of accomplishments and awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, attesting to his leadership.

Here’s a question that's on my mind every day when I read the latest higher ed news: Why in the world would anyone want to be a university president? The average tenure of college presidents keeps going down and I suspect part of the reason is how impossible the job has become.

New Orleans lost one of its great leaders yesterday. Moon Landrieu was a true champion of racial integration and a fearless moral voice during his political career. May he rest in peace and his legacy never be forgotten. My heart goes out to the Landrieu family.

I have never been as inspired in my life as I was by the colleagues and community members I worked with in the aftermath of Katrina. #HurricaneKatrina #KatrinaAnniversary

17 years ago Hurricane Katrina changed everything . The shock and stress of leading Tulane in the face of chaos and destruction have become a distant memory, but I will never forget how our community pulled together...
