The fact that the first overseas trip by a PBSC member is to Russia is a crystal clear sign that Beijing remains very much aligned with Moscow. 5/x.

Deploying the country’s No.3 on a foreign trip signals that the leadership in Beijing is increasingly aware of the need to minimize COVID-induced disruptions to China’s foreign policy agenda. However: That doesn’t mean Beijing’s zero-COVID policy is about to change. 4/x.

This is a big deal: Ranked No. 3 in the Party hierarchy, where he is a current member of the (all male) seven-man Politburo Standing Committee (PBSC), Li will be the highest ranking official to travel outside China since the COVID-19 pandemic started in 2020. 3/x.

It's not rocket science: COVID lockdown risks will continue driving down business confidence for the foreseeable future, as Beijing shows no signs of shifting away from the zero-COVID strategy. 7/x.

Over 2.5 years into the pandemic, foreign businesses are fed up with COVID curbs. According to a US-China Business Council survey of 117 member companies 21% are pessimistic about their 5-year business outlook in China. That was up from 9% in 2021. 6/x.

All 31 mainland provinces recorded at least one case over the past 10 days, reflecting the broadest exposure to the virus since records were first published in February 2021 (Bloomberg).
