If you don’t love the Triple Crown (as is), I’ve got nothing for you. The Belmont is iconic, the Preakness is the party and the Derby is the Derby. Cumulatively, it is the best five weeks of the year, every year.

That was one of the greatest moments ever under the Twin Spires. Lukas influenced generations of racing fans, coached the strongest roster of future star trainers in the game and, still as competitive as ever, just won the Kentucky Oaks at 86-years-old. Just awesome.

I can’t get enough of Sonny Leon’s ride. Calvin Borel’s ride on Mine that Bird was sensational but they were also several lengths the best. Sonny’s ride on Rich Strike was a true difference maker. Every move was the right move. Anything but and they don’t win. Remarkable!

Maybe one of these days we can have a moderate or slow pace? Thankful for cloud cover because Mage’s silks looked like a different blue than expected but in the end another fun Derby with some of the best colleagues and racing fans in the country. There’s nothing like the Derby!

At the risk of being over the top (and corny), the horses brought it today. It was billed as a chalk fest, and while the favorites did very well, they had to earn it. They all ran hard. Throw in some 8th pole savagery in the Forego and it was a great day.

Rich Strike is a bizarrely polarizing horse. If you just mention his name people break out into cold sweats. Our society loves to build people (and horses) up and then can’t wait to tear ‘em down. Who cares if the Derby was a setup? His Travers/Classic were faster races anyway.

Omaha Beach defeated both Game Winner and Improbable this spring. For a while, they were 1-2 on many lists. The early move (which rarely works) didn’t matter today and Omaha Beach has improved with each and every start. Mandella a Derby winning trainer? It has a ring to it!

Covfefe is awesome and was as dominant as you can be. And while doing so, she broke the stakes record and was just 0.07 seconds off the track record set by Groupie Doll, who set it in 2012, when she was a 4-years-old.

Tom’s d’Etat was just 0.02 seconds off the track record set by Victory Gallop in 1999 when he won the Stephen Foster. Today’s time was 1:47.30. Midnight Bisou, who was awesome, ran the same distance in 1:48.99... that’s a lot of lengths.

Letruska’s ears were telling early. She was loving the lead and ready to roll. As for Monomoy Girl, she’s always had this slight idle in the stretch and there was a rival today ready to take her on. But ultimately there’s no shame in losing a race like that!

I don't buy the notion Epicenter regressed off the Derby. He ran two points faster in the Preakness and was farther off a slower pace on a track kind to speed. Perhaps a more forward trip yields a different outcome but in reality Early Voting beat him to the punch at all calls.

You’re just not supposed to win 10 furlong American classics so easily. The Travers is often a dog fight but not this year. The stretch drive felt surreal as Tiz the Law made it look easy. His role as the overwhelming favorite for the Derby is deserved and starts now!
