While we are in the midst of a renaissance for reinforcement learning, it’s helpful to be reminded that there are very thoughtful people on both sides. Looks like @karpathy is on the traditional side of RL being sample inefficient.
In era of pretraining, what mattered was internet text. You'd primarily want a large, diverse, high quality collection of internet documents to learn from. In era of supervised finetuning, it was conversations. Contract workers are hired to create answers for questions, a bit.

This does not ring true, but wait until you hear about the real side hustles by early google engineers once it became clear how profitable the ecosystem became due to google.
Interesting convo last night at a house party. A low level employee at a large AI company (not saying which one) was there and the conversation moved to these insane salaries that the top guys are accepting to go to META and even more surprisingly, the guys that are turning down.

If you’re not hosting OpenAI’s open source model, I believe this is the best price. If you see lower, please correct this thread!.
Two new models just landed from OpenAI - and they’re live on DeepInfra. 🟢 gpt-oss-20B → $0.04 / $0.16 per Mtoken.🔵 gpt-oss-120B → $0.09 / $0.45 per Mtoken. Agentic, fast, open-source. As always - best price.

Math will be like chess. Solved by computers, but we will still celebrate the human achievements and hopefully it gets even more popular.
🚨 According to a friend, the IMO asked AI companies not to steal the spotlight from kids and to wait a week after the closing ceremony to announce results. OpenAI announced the results BEFORE the closing ceremony. According to a Coordinator on Problem 6, the one problem OpenAI

A lot of people say this is tech speed. But they aren’t familiar with weekend M&A speed. Great work by the Cognition/Windsurf leadership and their lawyers.
To put it mildly, the past week at Windsurf has been crazy. There have been a lot of different rumors and reports, so I want to share a transparent account of how it actually went down. Before I start, I just want to say that Varun and Douglas were great founders and this.

RT @phasecommunity: we built a design tool that feels like Figma but ships real code. no-code canvas → AI prompts → actual production code….

There is definitely a change at the SEC regarding crypto. Not just Commissioner Pearce, for whom @DinariGlobal founder @GabeOtte admitted “in some ways I don’t think I’m degen enough for her” but the whole SEC. Interesting developments to come!. Nice interview @RyanSAdams.
“The SEC has changed,” says @GabeOtte of @DinariGlobal. “Before, they wouldn’t even grant us an audience.”. Today? Gabe and his team were able to demo their tokenized stock platform live to 28 officials from across the SEC. Under the previous regime, meetings were rare. Now,

This is the non LinkedIn way to say he’s leaving OpenAI for Meta.
Becoming an RL diehard in the past year and thinking about RL for most of my waking hours inadvertently taught me an important lesson about how to live my own life. One of the big concepts in RL is that you always want to be “on-policy”: instead of mimicking other people’s.

Congratulations to @PlayAIOfficial on joining Meta! When I first met founders @_mfelfel and @play_extension they were early believers in the power of AI to generate human conversational voice. Now they will power voice and agents to billions of users around the world! Amazing to.
There has been a long history of trying to replicate human voice. Elevators used to have attendants, but they were replaced with a human voice (“Doors closing,” “Going up!”) as a way to provide assurance to the riders. More recently publications deployed “text-to-speech”

@deepseek_ai New entrant Minimax to SOTA open source models leaderboard, also from China.
Top three open source AI labs are all from China: DeepSeek, Qwen, and now Minimax (based on @ArtificialAnlys benchmarks). China appears to have some structural advantages in open source AI. Not just my assessment, Ion Stoica's too. Stoica is a star Berkeley professor, who

Here’s a good answer to the question of whether people should be studying computer science now 👇🏼.
There’s a new breed of GenAI Application Engineers who can build more-powerful applications faster than was possible before, thanks to generative AI. Individuals who can play this role are highly sought-after by businesses, but the job description is still coming into focus. Let.
