When I was a child, reading was often regarded as idle self-indulgence ("Nose stuck in a book again!"). So let's not get too hung up on the idea that reading is inherently virtuous. Plenty of other stuff is good for our brains.
Not just teenagers. Reading has collapsed across all age groups. I'm guilty myself - I read far less than I used to and that upsets me. Social media is rotting our collective brains.
