What's not often discussed was that Eric was the first Disney prince to actually have a decent personality. The closest one before was Philip in Sleeping Beauty, but even there, it wasn't much.
Eric ran into a burning ship, risking life and limb to save his dog and people wonder why Ariel fell in love with him.

Also, I should mention that I've never been a fan of finding easter eggs, so that aspect never really bothered me. As for the songs, I thought they were perfectly fine. Sure, they may not be the best songs Disney's put out, but they're definitely far from the worst I've heard.
