Seems like ML is playing a similar role in climate physics as it is in molecular scale physics. My dream is for someone to build a first principles based global climate simulation using iterative coarse graining. Is that ridiculous?

@TimothyDuignan We already do it for flame simulations so why not? The real question is whether you need chemical kinetics inside the transport model of climate. My first thought is the separation of timescales is pretty large so simpler approaches should work.

@drenerbas Yeah great points. There will be many layers that are adiabatic just like Born Oppenheimer so should simplify a lot. Will still need information from the finer scale though.
