Triathlon’s T100 World Tour was based on golf’s Race to Dubai. Presumably the year when Rory McIlroy shot a double bogey 7 on the 20th hole of the opening round.

Men's results still pending following athlete protests and hour plus after the finish. Throwback to 10 years ago in Dubai:

Scenes in Dubai. Extra bike laps AND then extra run laps following this. Men's results pending, women still racing, amidst utter chaos.
"What are you doing?!" 🚨 Remarkable scenes as the leading group in the T100 Triathlon miss the transition zone and are forced to do an extra lap on the bike 🧐

Since the feature was filed, Oman by UTMB has announced a return in December 2026, but I understand that Ironman 70.3 Bahrain next month is struggling with low numbers signing up. It looks a mixed - and moving picture - for endurance sport in the Middle East.

Wrote this feature on Ironman’s new partnership with Oman. Comments slating it both for use of the term sportswashing in the headline and because it didn’t go hard enough on human/women’s rights - so at least we have some balance. https://t.co/jGR1E1wb8V

Low participation rates plague Omani Ironman races, compared to other multisport efforts in the Middle East. Can they turn it around before hosting the 70.3 World Championship in 2029?

Insight from Jelle Geens & Kristian Blummenfelt about their interactions during Sunday's epic half-marathon battle in Spain. Geens: "Every time he hit the front it was so slow." Blu: "I was waiting for Casper!" And they still ran a 67 off the bike. https://t.co/4czU6He6CO

Older athletes are also have increasingly better understanding how to train for performance and extend competitive lifespan. Finally, there is also an increase in ‘wellness’ ie. Drugs, both legal and illegal, in sport, that is over indexing improvement in this category. 3/3

Why? It’s increasingly expensive, meaning more than ever it’s the wealthy who have cash to fund training, equipment and racing - & done smartly it works There are also more fulltime amateurs/early retired in this bracket, increasing the opportunity to focus on performance. 2/3

The new Ironman qualification system seems to be heavily favouring 50+ males. The benchmarks are set from the top performers from 2016-2022, so by definition the 50+ men are showing the biggest improvements. My theory is that it shows how the sport and times have changed. 1/3

Remember the name Bailey Matthews? It was a video that went viral of a young boy with cerebral palsy pushing his support frame to the side, determined to finish a triathlon. Fab to see that 10 years on he’s still competing for fun, fitness and health. https://t.co/reSsFv2NBO
