Glorious clouds and a magnificent sunset on the last day of the year. All within the space of 90 minutes in Guernsey.

A full church in Alderney for the 80th anniversary of Homecoming, the day when people exiled in 1940 to return to the island. The most moving moment was the playing of ‘There’s no place like home’ on the cornet on which John McCarthy played that time on this day in 1945.

After the solemnity of Saturday morning, and the dedication of the RGLI standard, the switch on of the Christmas lights in St Peter Port. Lots of happy, smiling faces ...

.. and to honour the memory of the men of Guernsey who served in the RGLI. And, with it, a commitment to continuing to build and develop our partnership with Ville De Masnières in France, where the RGLI fought bravely in November 1917.

A service of dedication and blessing of a new standard, which represents the Colours under which the Royal Guernsey Light Infantry marched and fought. The standard will be carried proudly on many occasions in the years to come, to help to retell the story of the RGLI ..

So easy to miss things during the day which are illuminated at night - such as these murals in St Peter Port in Guernsey. Perhaps long winter evenings aren’t so bad.

Gathering this morning for the Remembrance commemoration at Fort George in Guernsey, where Guernsey, British and German people lie side by side. A quiet and special place, where we lay wreaths at both the British and German memorial crosses.

From the splendour of @SalisburyCath last Thursday to two of Guernsey’s smallest places of worship today. An ecumenical pilgrimage from the ruined former Benedictine priory on Lihou to the chapel of Ste Apolline, with its glorious 15th century wall paintings.

On the one hand, fireworks are a noisy extravagance. On the other, they are glorious and life enhancing as a community watches, entranced. Thanks to the organisers of the North Show in #Guernsey for a magnificent display.

Even though Guernsey’s tomato industry declined some years ago, it’s good to see some wonderful prize-winning tomatoes at the South Show this weekend, along with produce from the gardens of the parishes, and much more.

Train delays are never welcome, but the frustration today was eased by the exemplary assistance of @GWRHelp staff at Bristol Temple Meads and Westbury, and the train managers on the services between Bristol Temple Meads and Southampton Airport Parkway.

Today, a day of variety in Guernsey. Two services at St Andrew’s church, the annual congregational meeting, and an afternoon in Guernsey Prison, speaking about St Peter to three groups of prisoners - and enjoying the beautiful Prison gardens. Ministry in the @churchofengland!

Forty five years ago today, I was ordained as a deacon in @ChesterCath Amazed and grateful for (most of) the different experiences and challenges of the past 45 years, the people it has been my privilege to meet, and the places where I have served and continue to serve.

Although there are difficult decisions on the horizon for the new @Govgg Assembly, I came away from today’s encounter with prospective deputies more encouraged than I had dared to hope. Naive optimism? Perhaps. But this is better than despair.

I spent far longer than I had planned at Beau Sejour today, talking to the candidates in Guernsey’s general election. This is direct democracy, with electors able to meet and talk to the candidates. It’s a great way of looking behind the manifestos and engaging with them.
