Surprisingly tigers aren't descended from sabretooth tigers. Fossils in China show that #tigers evolved over 2m years ago. The sabretooth is a different species, which died out 10,000 years ago. With only 3,500 wild tigers left we must stop their extinction from our modern world.

#DSWF at #CITES: #Tigers - Counties calling on China to close captive breeding facilities - highlighting how such facilities contribute to the killing of wild tigers & how they can create legal markets to launder illegal tiger parts and derivatives. #StopTheTrade #ProtectTigers

#Tiger cubs are born helpless & blind βoften in caves, rocky crevices or hidden long grass. Youngsters are totally dependent on their mother for protection & food. They quickly grow & after c.15 months the cubs leave their family to find their own territories π

Much like the rough tongue of the domestic cat, a tigerβs tongue has a coarse, sandpaper-like texture with many sharp barbs. This helps the #tiger to groom itself and lick the fur off of its prey. π

#Tigers have the second strongest bite of all carnivore land mammals - topped only by the polar bear! Relative to their size however #jaguars have the greatest bite force of the big cats. Strong bites enable tigers to hunt & eat prey π

Since this photo was taken in 2004, three of the #tigers have been poached with the fourth dying more recently under suspicious circumstances - DSWF's #TigerTime campaign is working to protect tigers and stop this ongoing slaughter. π

#Tigerβs eyes have round pupils, unlike the distinctive vertical-slit pupils of domestic cats. Vertical-slit pupils are most common in predators who hunt at night. Tigers however hunt primarily in the morning and evening. π

As well as bathing and playing in water, #tigers are also surprisingly strong swimmers, with adults known to cross rivers several kilometres or more wide and swim many kilometres in a day! π
