Funny enough, it all looks straightforward on paper….until I tried carbonizing my first batch and it turned completely to ash. I remember just staring at it, realizing thousands of naira had gone up in smoke. Research really keeps you humble. 😅

I worked on modifying cotton stalks, which are naturally hydrophilic, to make them more hydrophobic. Two approaches were used: acetylation with acetic anhydride in the presence of NBS, and impregnation with zinc chloride followed by carbonization at high temperature.
My research started with a simple question: how can we clean up crude oil–polluted water in the Niger Delta more sustainably? As someone from the Niger Delta, I’ve seen the damage oil spills cause and wanted to lend my voice to the issue through science. So glad I did that!
