Budding Journalists: This is the center of @nytimes newsroom as of noon today, Election Day. If you're ever needing evidence of the significance of independent journalism in society, think of the essential work that so many have done up to now and will do in the coming days.

Thanks to all of the journalists out there in the field or in newsrooms this election week providing essential work at a time of unprecedented challenge and change. I see you and support you.

Budding Journalists: Success in this industry requires more perseverance and intention than ever. Newsrooms face many pressures. But don't let anyone ever tell you that journalism isn't needed in society. It's more needed now than ever.

Good luck, everyone. And I encourage you not to wait until the last hour, when we sometimes receive up to 7 applications per minute.

It takes a titanic effort to put these applications out every year. The fellowship is now a multi-million-dollar career development program. Thanks to Carla Correa, Nia-Symonne Martin and the many others involved.

We often interview Nov. through Jan., and we typically announce the class in March. This program is for journalists early in their careers (up to 5 years in the industry). We do recommend having experience to be a competitive candidate and to get the most out of your time here.

Reminder: It takes us some time to sort through the thousands of candidates who apply. My team and I likely won’t be able to respond if you ask us about your application.

Budding Journalists: Applications for the 2025-2026 are now open through Dec. 2. Some new ones: an A.I. initiatives fellow and a news video fellow.

Budding Journalists: There isn't one single path to career success. That's especially true as journalism is far more specialized and heavy on tech, data and visuals. Approach your career with nimbleness and an understanding that twists and turns are part of any journey.

Budding Journalists: The world is awash in information. Making sense of it all has become a larger part of the job. Data, coding and visual skills can help do that. Consider adding them to your reporting repertoire and see your career options grow.

Budding Journalists: Newsroom careers can be tricky. Industry cutbacks and constant change present daunting challenges. But one thing will never change: The need for independent journalism. That need has never been more present. Stick with it as the world needs you more than ever.
