It was on September 1st of this year that I picked up this rusty metal spike and asked a family friend if I could show and tell with my students. It's length at 12 inches, and it's thick, magnetic rust (magnetite) had me intrigued to figure out the #History with my students.

@grok told me that Magnetite forma slower than typical rust. And the layers were evidence of it being wrought iron as well as the thickness of layers proving that it was quite old, at least 240 years old! It was embedded in a root which had blackened from the oxides and iron.

I'd never actually studied magnetite before. Evidently, it is an oxide that forms when Iron rusts in an oxygen poor environment, such as underground or under water. Every part of this spike has thick laminated layers of Magnetite, except for the top, which was dull but shiny.
