We at Iditarod Nation are mourning the loss of 4-time Iditarod Champion, Lance Mackey. Lance passed away late in the evening of September 7, 2022 after a 20+ year battle of cancer. Our condolences go out to his family, friends, fans and the mushing community.

Jeremy Keller has made it home. Keller scratched at the 263 mile checkpoint in Nikolai on March 12 and chose to mush back to Willow. Which makes his round trip about 526 miles.

Straw Drop Time! Yesterday, volunteers were busy working with straw, bagging it up, and getting it organized to be shipped out to checkpoints. We call this 'Straw Drop'. When the mushers and dogs arrive in checkpoints during the race, straw will be waiting for each team!

We have a good size cluster of mushers at the head of the race. Currently, in the lead is Jessie Royer, Brent Sass, and Thomas Waerner. In Kaltag, the first to arrive will receive the Bristol Bay Native Corporation Fish First Award of $2,000 in cash and 25 lbs of salmon.

Nicolas Petit’s team has moved on to White Mountain and is no longer waiting in the cabin as we reported earlier today. There was a possibility Petit would follow the Elim mushers to Nome before we recieved news he had moved on. Petit scratched early Thursday morning.

Sled dogs run on such varied types of snow and ice that booties are used to prevent abrasions and snow clumps on paws. Think of how many booties any one musher racing Iditarod must go through and how much time it takes to put booties on a whole team. #Happydog 🐾
