Penn State's 'Backer Plug Sim
Newly appointed Duke HC Manny Diaz used a 'backer plug simulated pressure with a non-traditional Tampa coverage behind it as one of his top pressures during the '23 season.
I break it down in this week's article.

Keep coming back to this clip...
It is such a good teach tape
When I talk about stabbing the pec & slapping down to get the WR's arm down, this is what I mean
The constant stab-slap slows the WR down, allowing the DB to stay in-phase
#ArtofX
//
#DBU
Great look at how to get IN-PHASE when beat off the line.
Don't look back for the ball. Chase mode.
Slap the wrist to throw the WR's rhythm off & to get in control.
DO NOT armbar!
When in-phase, LOOK-n-LEAN.
Run'em into the sideline.
Track the ball. Press the hip.
#ArtofX
Like I tell my guys in BAIL tech, if you keep that low shoulder down (the one towards the WR) you create a more efficient break & transition because of body position
All Ramsy had to do was snap that left arm down because he was already in his tuck
Break 👉🏻 Accelerate 👉🏻 FINISH
This is straight 🆙 clinic tape
Feet never die
Stays 🔲
Doesn't panic on the release
Gets into phase & turns his head
Looks 👀 & leans into the hip
You don't have to touch the WR to impede movement
Stay 🔲 & make'em run the hump
... & the kid's only a FROSH‼️
#ArtofX
Great tech on the speed release from Hill by
#35
(Fayson)
When a WR is just out of reach I teach my DBs to slap the wrist to get the WR out of rhythm
Allows you to catch up &/or force a 1-handed catch
It also turns the WR's body, slowing them down

Georgia used FIB vs. Bama's Odd alignments to get their best rusher aligned as the apex player & not activated in the rush.
Change of strength motions challenged Bama's single-high coverages.

Clinic rep by Seahawks' CB Tre Brown
WR pushes chest- Swipe the hand down
Once WR puts his hands up to get the ball (& shows his chest)- Punch up & out through his hands
Rake with the opposite hand to ensure you disrupt the catch point or take another shot at the ball

Clinic look at what I call a HOOK technique when in-phase
Place your elbow in the WR's armpit & drive through his hip (look & lean)
Notice how the DB holds the top shoulder, then places his Rt elbow in the WR's armpit
This hinders the WR's running motion
🚫 Arm-bar
#ArtofX
I talk all the time about the "step-off" technique used by my Safties.
Need a drill to rep that?

10 yrs ago this week I quit my job & enrolled at Baylor
The plan was to just sit in the office until someone gave me something to do
My 1st month there I went to class, worked a reading program for the Ed Dept, & just read books
Reading is what got Phil Bennett to notice me ⤵️
Great ex. of out of phase tech:
👉🏻 NEVER look back - Attack the hip
👉🏻 Swipe the near arm - Get in control
👉🏻 🥊 Punch 🆙 & out ⤴️
The goal is to force the WR to make a spectacular catch, which in the clip would have been one-handed

Chiefs LBs working classic read & fit drill. Notice the communication every rep by LBer reading pulling guard.
Love the simplicity and effectiveness of this drill and others like it. The more coaches mimic the game, the better prepared players are to execute without thinking.
Crazy to think in June '17 I released Cautious Aggression
I had no idea the path MQ & my books would take me
To date I've sold over 12k books across the world
That's wild
I'm humbled by that number & it motivates me to continue to put out quality content

CBS had an excellent clip package of Georgia using their pre-snap stemming to get false starts.
...then they got one against Mizzou! 🤣
Any loss of yardage early in the down/series amplifies the success rate for the defense.

To ADs/HCs:
When interviewing young coaches, experience is overrated. In fact, its proven, most people over time get worse (complacent).
Things to look for:
1) Externally focused
2) Clear thinker
3) Imaginative
4) Inclusive
5) Confident expert

Tuff = 404, but Nose is heavy backside (Lag)

Closed = TO TE

Don't take the bait of a quick-jab‼️

Belichick out here w/ his 6-1 daring McVay to run on him
LAR obliges
Things of Note:
-Ran an Over Walk (DE to Nose in 4i/Will 9) most of night
-Forced the ball to bounce or into clogged "A" gap
-Stayed single-high w/ 1 Saf in the hole to cut-off Over routes (layers)

Mike Sainristil is this year's Jalen Pitre / Brian Branch.
Primary Ni in college, but has a diverse skill set.
He is small (5-9 183) but plays much bigger.

He checks

He can't help that the route is skinny & not flat across the field

Mint Package vs. Tite Front
This clinic discusses the nuances found within each scheme & the main differences in how each defense is structured.
>> As seen on YouTube! Now exclusively on MatchQuarters.

#ArtofX
If you want a truly hybrid D scheme where you can bounce from 4-down, 3-down, & 3-Hi, the Under Front is where to start.
Base rule is to set the 5t to the most WR side, but you can mix & match depending on the offense being faced.
Shifting to 404, 505, or Over is easy.

Love compression or "stress" drills.
We work this same drill in press & also when teaching a ZN turn.

No arm-bar, lean into hip, find the cut-off.

C3: Gotta have dudes in the seam & a Post Saf that can play the whole field
C2: Gotta have dudes at Saf w/ range & CBs that tackle
Qtrs: Gotta have dudes because you are basically playing C0
Guess you gotta have dudes... 🤷🏻♂️
#ArtofX
In BAIL tech there is a fine line when trying to stack the WR
Too far inside & you are blind (see below)
Too far outside & you can give up the Post
DB has to work to the midpoint to inhibit a free release, but also for the ability to lean (Fade) or drive inside (Post)
#ArtofX
🤔 Interesting take by Mora on NFL defenses:
- 15 DL/LBs taken in the 1st Round
- Evolution away from single-gap 8-man fronts
- Need to create fluid fronts w/ players having the ability to play multiple gaps
- Must keep safeties out of primary fits
What a time to be alive!
I'm obviously a Phil Bennett "homer" & respect the hell out of Saban, but the more Michigan film I watch I just love how a Don Brown defense plays.

I mean, watch that MOF safety fill. It's an attitude & it comes from the top.

The evolution of this has been to use reductions, sims, & Creepers to keep offenses off balance.
>> Even Front but Odd Spacing
The two EDGES allow the defense to keep a better pass rush than the traditional Tite Front (404) & lower the reliance on edge pressure (Blitz-to-Bear).
Kirby Smart on how Todd Orlando showed him and DC Glenn Schumann the benefits of odd front and Mint, particularly how they have more “depth” than 4 down structures
“When you’re 4 down, it’s kinda like War. They know where you’re at and they’re gonna blow your ass up eventually”
Let's have a conversation about Quarters...
In my mind, there are only 3 ways to play it:
- MEG/4-Lock = Saf takes
#2
Out & 🔒 the CB
- Ni pushes
#2
out, Saf leverages the hash, & the CB plays
#1
(Sky)
- Rail It! or pure ZN, Ni is B2B
