I've always felt that most people who say "you have to choose your battles" weren't choosing many battles at all. If any. Then again, my own activism is probably due to a lack of impulse control that simply LOOKS like courage after the fact.

Empathy in action is often a deviation from standard procedures. Actions of empathy violate the assumption that quality = consistency. We build trust by being inconsistent on purpose: more generous than required or sacrificing a bit more than we have to.
