@TheRedJinty The story ideas just flow naturally from there as well Like what about a story where Niaโs been completely overhauled and works on Sodor now but she finds it hard to accept that sheโs fine now, sheโs not fending for herself, and she can just relax and share the work with others

like sorry bro you are not going to stand there and tell me the guy who would write entire stories to justify changes to his characters' designs Absolutely Positively Intended for Henry to be a 4-6-2 "Pacific" from the very start.

one of the most frustrating things about RWS lore is how blurred the line is between "this is what has been decided as canon in retrospect" and "this is what was had in mind/passively accepted originally"
@theburiedtruck Even with Dalby it feels like a copout sometimes. Yes, I know that Awdry has said that Henry MK1 is canonically a 4-6-2, but are we SURE that wasn't something he decided retroactively? Dalby may be Dalby, but I find it hard to believe he only drew Henry correctly like, twice

The Railway Series is a collection of PICTURE books. To say an entire half of that medium is unreliable when most of the artists really did care and put in effort to do it justice feels like a slap in the face to them.

Alright, Iโll bite. I have very conflicted feelings about the โyou canโt trust the illustrationsโ sentiment, and feel it should only be applicable to Dalbyโs work. Yes, he got a bit goofy with his pictures, but subsequent artists were consistent and adhered to what Awdry wanted.
post your thomas the train hot takes (and i mean actual hot takes you fucking cowards, not some bullshit like โooh this series is better than this other oneโ, i want stuff that might have people questioning your sanity) and i will say if i agree with you or if i think youโre dumb

This idea kinda rhymes with Hiro's "Just keep puffing, Henry!" And could be how Nia motivated herself to puff across Africa in search of a new home, despite aching wheels, leaky tubes, and a worn out boiler. An epic journey that eventually leads her to Sodor.

one part of the book that really stuck with me was Salva describing his mental battle against physical exhaustion from nonstop walking. "I'll go to that tree, and no further" He would just tell himself variations of that over and over again to keep himself moving.

in middle school I read a book about the true story of Salva Dut, a Sudanese boy who was displaced from his home by civil war and endured an epic trek across Sudan. He eventually moved to America and started a charity that opens water wells. Nia's story could be akin to this.

not that this is necessary to be a good character but part of the appeal of Hiro & Victor is that they both have really cool and captivating backstories They made Nia somewhat of a drifter, an engine with no home shed, that could've been the meat missing from her bone
the older you get the more you appreciate how tasteful Hiro & Victor are when both of them could've easily been just as bad as any of the other BWBA examples, but somehow they turned out just right. Hiro launched childhood me into a hyperfixation with Japan and the JP dub lmao

Part of it was that HiT had the wisdom to not try and push a bunch of them at once. You can't flesh out a character when they're battling for spotlight with 15 others like they were in the BWBA episodes. Hiro and Victor were naturally integrated by appearing every so often
Part of why the BWBA era was so ridiculous to me when it came out is that the show was immediately doing international characters tastefully the second the show switched to CGI. It was a baffling step backwards in terms of foreign representation.

Person I work with who had a Trump bumper sticker on his car just told me he's changed his views on trans people after getting to know me, and that he feels like he's not that person anymore. So fucking proud of those who actually get into the real world and open their minds. ๐ญ
