How did America’s highways become the Wild West? Each month brings a new awful trucking tragedy. August: an illegal U-turn in FL kills 3. October: a truck slams into cars that burst into flames. November: a truck jackknifes and kills a newlywed couple https://t.co/aRjpETFRAe ...

Recently India's PM Modi spoke about it. Translation: "These are kids of regular families who are bamboozled by dreams of wealth and success. We need to attack the entire ecosystem root and branch." The US and India plan to coorperate on this, he said. https://t.co/JgjyutKlDR

As @BillyRande83121 said quoted in this piece, fraud, poor training, and exploitation. https://t.co/pgyWKh0o7i

Serious issues exist with the CDL licensing procedure but the new rule could result in unemployment for 200,000+ good drivers.

It is about why there was a surge at the border during 2021-2024, and the human smuggling* networks that fed it. *Comment from Kylla Lanier: "For a fee, smugglers move people across borders illegally." So, the Dunki route is better described as human smuggling, not trafficking.

This is about a cohort of asylum applicants who were trained under particularly lax CDL/licensing standards in the last 5-6 years. It is about carriers relying on a vulnerable immigrant workforce who can be exploited with low pay and overwork -- both can cause unsafe driving.

It is also not about non-domiciled CDLs. Again, as I say in the piece: "[F]oreigners with work permits have been getting [such] CDLs since at least 2011. DACA recipients, for one, are also forced to rely on them." Eg. Jorge Lujan has had a nondom for 10 yrs according to docs.

A few clarifications are in order. This is not about Sikh truck drivers. As I say in the piece: "Many have also decided that Sikh drivers are the problem, when in reality, the nation has over 150,000 Sikh drivers, most of whom have driven safely for years."

Unvetted migrants, permitted to work, met weakened barriers into trucking. Details in here depend on understanding I’ve gained from insiders like @TruckerDesiree, @BillyRande83121, Raman Dhillon, and reading incredible research by @maybedanielleee. 👇👇 https://t.co/aRjpETFRAe

Our asylum system also failed in '21-24 until Biden’s June EO. Millions of applicants were let in BEFORE being vetted. Was it failure or deliberate policy? NYT makes a good case for the former. Admin wanted to stem the surge, didn’t know how. https://t.co/BqvhSSmdPM

After Harjinder’s arrest, support for him flowed in from India. An MP released a video asking the External Minister to intervene. Political leaders wrote letters in support. Media flocked to his village. This does not look like a man being persecuted... https://t.co/apCJ1lZqJi
I appeal to external affairs minister @DrSJaishankar to take up Sikh truck driver Harjinder Singh’s case with the United State’s govt to ensure his rights, including that to wear a ‘dastar’, are protected & he is not persecuted as a murderer. Harjinder committed a grave mistake

Case in point: Harjnder was at the SF referendum in 2024. Oddly, I was there too, as a reporter. I might have crossed paths. After the U-turn crash, Pannun rallied in support of Harjinder. Here’s Harjinder’s tiktok from the SF referendum. https://t.co/EqcHKoCrad

An odd fact, read as you will: Founder of Sikhs For Justice, organizer of the referendums, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, is an immigration attorney…& also files asylum claims for migrants from Punjab. Incidentally, migrants ALSO help swell their ranks...a conflict of interest

If Sikh, Khalistan is a ready-made asylum pretext. A separatist movement that once roiled India (1980s/90s) with terrorism, radicalism, hijacks, plane bombing…now it mostly lives in the west as a referendum. https://t.co/xxc0x1UrYq
